GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team walked off the Samford Bulldogs, 6-4, thanks to a three-run home run from
Jake Ogden in the ninth in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.
With the win, the Spartans, now 31-18, have concluded regular-season competition in the SoCon with a 15-6 record. Outcomes around the conference next weekend will determine UNCG's seeding in the 2024 SoCon Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mitchell Smith put the Spartans on the board first by lifting a solo home run out to left in the bottom of the third inning.
Caleb Cozart then launched a double into shallow left-center to score
Aidan Brewer from first with two outs, making it 2-0.
In the third inning, Samford tied the game, 2-2, when John Anderson sent a two-run home run out to right. However, UNCG reclaimed the lead when
Luke Jenkins scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 3-2 Spartans.
The Bulldogs grabbed their first lead in the sixth inning when Angelo Prieto doubled down the line in left to score a pair, making it 4-3 Samford.
The Spartans walked it off in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a no-doubt home run sent out to left by Ogden for three runs and a 6-4 victory.
NOTES:
- Noah Chapman made his third start of the season and worked into the sixth inning while allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
- In relief of Chapman, Grant Aycock pitched the final four frames and struck out five while allowing just one hit.
- Ogden hit his seventh home run of the season in the ninth to win it for the Spartans and led the team with three RBI.
- Brewer and Smith paced the Spartans with two runs.
- Brewer led UNCG with three hits.
