GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team fell 5-2 to the No. 5 seed Wofford Terriers in a quarterfinal game at The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament on Friday morning at Fluor Field.
The Spartans, who are the top seed in the tournament, will play in their second game later on at 4 p.m. Friday against No. 3 seed East Tennessee State (ETSU) in an elimination game. The winner will play again on Saturday against an opponent who is to be determined.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both sides left a pair of runners on base during the first inning. UNCG's starting pitcher,
Hunter Shuey escaped a bases-loaded jam in the opening half inning by picking off a runner at second base.
Wofford scored the game's first run in the third inning when Tyler Hare was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing Marshall Toole to walk in and cross the plate. David Wiley then made it 2-0 Terriers when he hit a sacrifice fly to right.
The Terriers extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Dixon Black scored on an RBI groundout batted to the shortstop by Daniel Jackson.
Both sides scored two runs in the sixth inning. Jack Renwick hit an RBI single before Toole also drove in a run with a double, making it 5-0. However, the Spartans answered with two of their own thanks to a two-run single hit up the middle by
Luke Jenkins to round out a nine-pitch at bat. After six frames, UNCG trailed 5-2.
Danny Thompson Jr. came on in relief for the Spartans to start the seventh inning and no-hit the Terriers through the finish. However, the Spartans were also held in check as the game ended with Wofford prevailing by three runs, 5-2.
