Baseball Earns Eighth Straight Win in Extras at The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team won 8-5 in 11 innings at The Citadel in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday afternoon at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

The win extended the Spartans' season-high winning streak to eight games.

The game also marked UNCG's fourth time competing in extra innings this season. The Spartans are now 2-2 on the year when games go to extras.

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second straight game, the Bulldogs struck first when Wells Sykes scored on a fielding error in the opening frame.

The Citadel held the 1-0 lead until the top of the fifth, when Jake Ogden pulled a two-run home run down the line in left for his fourth blast of the season to give UNCG a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom half of the sixth, Garrett Fullmer singled to left to score Thomas Rollauer and tie it at 2-2. However, the Spartans took the lead back in the top of the seventh with Luke Holland hitting a leadoff triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly hit out to center by Tyler Steele. Ogden then put UNCG up by a pair, 4-2, with his second homer of the afternoon out to left.

The Spartans extended their lead to 5-2 in the eighth inning with Luke Jenkins singling up the middle to score Trey Truitt from third.

The Bulldogs answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of their own to cut it back to two, 5-3, when Travis Elliot doubled down the left field line to score Chase Loggins. The Citadel shaved the deficit to one and then tied it with back-to-back RBI singles from Garrett Dill and Travis Lott. UNCG kept it tied, 5-5, with Aidan Brewer turning a six-three double play to end the inning.

With the game needing extra innings to determine a winner, Jacob Dilley reached on an error and was pinch ran for by Cam Murphy. In the next at bat, Murphy reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Zachary Walsh. Holland then reached on a walk before him and Murphy each scored on a triple to left by Steele. Steele then scored on an RBI single blooped to right by Brewer, which made it 8-5.

Grant Aycock returned to the mound for the Spartans in the bottom of the 11th inning after entering as a reliever in the 10th. In doing so, he hung a second zero on the Bulldogs to secure the 8-5 victory for UNCG.
