Women’s Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw in Season Opener Versus UNCW

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 1-1 draw to UNC Wilmington (UNCW) on Sunday night at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG outmatched UNCW in the first half in shots, 5-2, while the Seahawks registered four corner kicks to the Spartans one.

The Spartans utilized their speed in the early minutes of the second half and tallied three shots in the first seven minutes of play. Taylor Mentzer registered the first goal of the season for the Blue & Gold with a shot on frame 19 seconds into the second half. Ava Kiss slipped the ball inside for Mentzer to put home at 45:19.

Just under 10 minutes later, UNCW's Ayla Vaneus sent a cross into the box and Ayanna Parker found the back right corner of the net scoring the equalizer, 1-1.

Similarly to the first half, UNCG kept the pressure on and outshot UNCW 5-1 in the second half.

QUOTE FROM HEAD COACH STEFANI WORKMAN
"I thought this was a really good game to start our season. Wilmington is a tough place to play. I am happy with how the team reacted in the second half to establish our style of play and to get the goal early. There are always things we can learn about our team, but this non-conference schedule was built to prepare our style and mindset for SoCon play."

BY THE NUMBERS
  • UNCG held the advantage in shots 10-3.
  • UNCW had 10 corner kicks to the Spartans' three.
