Volleyball Splits Day One of Greensboro Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team split day one of the Greensboro Invitational by dropping a 3-1 contest with Tennessee Tech (23-25, 15-25, 25-16, 22-25), but coming back into Fleming Gym Friday night to defeat Georgetown, 3-1, (25-20, 25-22, 25-27, 25-17).

HOW IT HAPPENED (TENNESSEE TECH)
The Golden Eagles notched a 3-0 run to start off the match. UNCG responded with a 6-1 run of its own later to take its first lead of the match, 12-10. Tennessee Tech regained its advantage with a 4-0 run for the 15-13 lead over the Spartans. Although the remainder of the first set stayed closed, the Golden Eagles were able to maintain the lead to claim set one, 25-23.

The Golden Eagles continued their momentum into the second set by starting off with a 4-0 run. Tennessee Tech held the lead for the entire second frame to clinch it, 25-15.  

The Spartans found their stride in set three by starting things off with a 10-4 lead over the Golden Eagles never allowing Tennessee Tech to lead in game three. A final kill from McKenna Timmerman secured set three for UNCG, 25-16.

UNCG started off the fourth set by notching a 3-0 run over Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles chipped their way back into the game and the two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the set. With the Golden Eagles on top, 23-22, the visiting team added two more points to come away with set four, 25-22, for the 3-1 win.


BY THE NUMBERS (TENNESSEE TECH)

  • Allie Sweet led the match with 20 kills.
  • Izora Gragg notched her fourth double-double of the season and her career after leading the Spartans with 33 assists and 11 digs.
  • America Anderson led both teams at the net with 4.0 total blocks.
  • Gragg and Sweet paced the Spartans with two service aces a piece.

 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GEORGETOWN)
The Spartans notched a 4-0 run to start off Friday night's match against the Hoyas. Georgetown responded with a 6-1 run to take its first lead at 6-5. A setter dump from Gragg followed by another kill from Anderson gave the Spartans the 12-10 lead. UNCG held the advantage for the remainder of the first frame and closed it with a service error from Georgetown's Emily Wen, 25-20.

Set two was a back-and-forth battle that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes. With the game tied at 21, a kill and service ace from McKenna put UNCG up, 23-21. The Hoyas added one more point before UNCG closed out the second set by gaining two more rallies to secure the 25-22.

The third set was more of the same with both teams battling it out, coming down to the wire. Georgetown was able to hold its lead for the remainder of the set. With the Hoyas on top, 24-21, UNCG recorded a 4-1 run to tie the game at 25. Georgetown responded with a 2-0 run to come away with the third set, 27-25.

The Hoyas got on the board first in the fourth set with two-straight points. However, the Spartans answered back by notching a 7-0 run to take the lead and hold it for the remainder of the match. Two consecutive kills from Madeline Timmerman and Sweet gave UNCG the 25-17 victory for the 3-1 win.

BY THE NUMBERS (GEORGETOWN)

  • Three Spartans posted double digit kills. Sweet led the way with 17, Madeline followed closely behind with 13 and McKenna recorded 11.
  • Madeline and Sweet led the team with 4.0 total blocks. Sweet's four blocks was a new career high.
  • Gragg recorded her fifth double-double of the season and her career with 46 assists and 12 digs.
  • Chloe Nussbaum recorded a new career high by leading the match with three service aces.
  • Mya Wood paced the squad with 16 digs.
