Women’s Soccer to Host ETSU in SoCon Home Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team continues The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate of its schedule by hosting ETSU on Sunday, Sept. 22 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium at 1:00 p.m.

UNCG leads the all-time series, 13-9-0. The Bucs have won the last four meetings between the two teams.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
UNCG won its SoCon opener, 5-1, scoring five unanswered goals against VMI on Thursday in Lexington, Virginia. Merle Greulich led the way with a brace, while Mel Herrera, Rachel Poplin and Ava Kiss each scored one goal. UNCG outshot the Keydets, 25-2.
 
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
  • Kiss paces the team with six points scoring two goals and two assists this season.
  • Greulich and Taylor Mentzer have both scored two goals.
  • Morgan Brubaker, Herrera and Poplin have each chipped in one goal.
  • Along with Kiss, Mairead Gayer and Ryen Ortiz each have two helpers.
  • The Spartans have the edge over their opponents in shots on goal, 41-39, while foes have the advantage in corner kicks, 38-35.
  • UNCG had 25 shots against the Keydets and it was the first game since Sept. 7, 2023, when the Spartans had 20 or more shots. The Spartans had 20 shots against Coastal Carolina that day and won 3-0.
  • Among the SoCon, UNCG is third with 1.111 goals against average and 0.744 save percentage.
  • Malone was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 3. This was her first career weekly award.
  • This was the Spartans' first SoCon Player of the Week since Oct. 28, 2022, when Nadia Wilson earned the award and first SoCon Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 27, 2022, when Abby Buchholz earned the recognition.
  • Head Coach Stefani Workman is in her first year at the helm of the Spartans and eighth year overall with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish seventh in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Spartans added six freshmen and one graduate transfer to the 2024 roster.
SCOUTING ETSU
  • ETSU was voted to finish third in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • Sydney Somogyi and Ashton Blair were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Among the SoCon, ETSU is second in save percentage (0.796).
  • ETSU is coming off a 6-0 victory over The Citadel in Johnson City, Tennessee, where five different Bucs scored a goal.
  • Opponents are outshooting the Bucs, 105-78, while ETSU is outmatching foes in saves, 43-21.
  • Grace Eatz is leading the team with five points (2 G, 1 A), while Ruby Teixeira is second with two goals and four points.
  • Blair has played between the posts in every game so far this season, giving up 11 goals and has tallied 41 saves.
  • Blair is leading the SoCon with 5.86 saves per game and second in total saves.
