GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team could not get past in-state foe Elon on Sunday night at the UNCG Soccer Stadium, falling to the Phoenix, 2-1.
UNCG's junior
Morgan Brubaker scored the first goal of her collegiate career during the second half of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG had the first two opportunities of the game with Brubaker and
Mairead Gayer tallying shots that both went wide of the goal in the second and third minutes, respectively. Elon ended up outshooting UNCG in shots in the first half, 6-5, as the Phoenix netted two goals before the half. In the 11
th minute, Kennedy Jones slipped the ball to Lydia Totten who entered the 18-yard box. Totten then found the back left corner of the net for a 1-0 advantage at 10:49.
Later in the first half, Elon registered its second corner kick of the game.
Emma Malone punched out the initial inswinger, but the Phoenix Jordan Green headed the ball down to Ashlee Brehio who was there to put back the rebound giving Elon a 2-0 lead at 31:13.
The Phoenix was called for a foul inside the top left corner of the 18-yard box 21 minutes into the second half. Brubaker stepped up to take the penalty kick and buried it to the right of the diving goalkeeper, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1, at 66:49.

The Spartans will head on the road to Conway, South Carolina, to face Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 12 with a 7:00 p.m. start at Coastal Carolina Soccer Stadium.
They will then return home to host Liberty on Sunday, Sept. 15 for a 1:00 p.m. start time at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
