GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team dropped a five-set thrilling matchup with the ETSU Buccaneers (21-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22, 13-15) on Saturday night in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action in Greensboro, North Carolina, in Fleming Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The Bucs got out to an early 3-0 advantage to never allow the Spartans to lead in the first frame. However, UNCG chipped away to stay within range. With ETSU holding a 17-12 advantage, a kill from
McKenna Timmerman began a 4-0 Spartan run, making it a one-point game, 17-16. Although the remainder of the set stayed close, ETSU was able to pull away with the first set, 25-21.
Set 2 – UNCG flipped the script in the second set, claiming an early 3-1 lead over ETSU. The Bucs got the first point of game two, but that would be the only advantage the visiting team would hold in the frame. The game tied on four occasions, but the Spartans maintained the momentum throughout. With UNCG holding a 21-18 advantage the squad recorded four unanswered points to take set two, 25-18.
Set 3 – The Bucs bounced back in the third set, securing a 3-0 lead in the early goings. With ETSU holding a 7-4 advantage, UNCG was able to tack on three-straight-points to tie things up, 7-7. The Bucs held the lead throughout the entirety of the game despite the Spartans continuing to chip away. With the Bucs on top, 23-20, a kill from
Allie Sweet followed by a block assist from
Elenoa Sing and
Robin Rosser made it a one-point game, 23-22. However, ETSU closed out the frame with a 2-0 run, 25-22, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set 4 – The fourth frame was a point-for-point duel in the early goings seeing eight ties and four lead changes. However, with ETSU on top, 7-6, UNCG strung together two consecutive points for an 8-7 advantage. The set tied two more times after that, but the Spartans never allowed the Bucs to take the lead again in the frame. A final kill from
Connore' Siler-Nixon granted UNCG with the fourth set, 25-22.
Set 5 – The Spartans continued their momentum in the final frame, starting things off with three-straight points. However, the Bucs quickly responded with a 3-0 run of their own turning the final set into a back-and-forth battle. With UNCG holding a 13-12 lead, ETSU notched a 3-0 run to come away with the final set, 15-13, for the 3-2 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sweet registered her 16th career double-double and 11th of the season after leading the Spartans with 18 kills and 26 digs.
- Gabby Seeds notched her fourth double-double of the season and her career after leading the match with 40 assists and adding 12 digs.
- Rosser and Siler-Nixon added 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
- Chloe Nussbaum added 17 digs on the day.
- Siler-Nixon paced the Spartans with six total blocks.
