GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team, seeded seventh, advances to the second round of The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament after shutting out 10th-seeded VMI 2-0 on Tuesday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UNCG was firing on all cylinders in the first half, taking five shots in the first 25 minutes of action. In the 31st minute, Taylor Mentzer crossed a ball in from outside the box and hit the top of the crossbar which redirected straight to Ava Kiss who tapped in the goal for an early 1-0 lead. This was Kiss's third of the season with the last one coming against Furman on Oct. 2. The Spartan attack offense continued to batter the VMI defense, taking eight shots to close out the first half with a 67% ball possession total. However, the Keydets' keeper kept the Spartan attack at bay to end the first half at 1-0.
In the second half, VMI took a quick shot early, but it sailed wide, and then UNCG took the next 12 shots of the half. The offensive barrage yielded results in the 55th minute, when a foul inside the 18-yard box brought Mentzer to the penalty spot. She coolly took the penalty and buried a shot to the left upper 90, extending the lead to 2-0. The Spartans' defense made goalkeeper Emma Malone's night easy as she was not tested all night long. UNCG held possession for the remainder of the half to chew up the rest of the clock to end the game at 2-0.
