SoCon Quarterfinal: Women’s Soccer to Battle Western Carolina on Friday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team continues its postseason quest as it travels to Cullowhee, North Carolina, for The Southern Conference (SoCon) Quarterfinal match on Friday, Oct. 31.

The seventh-seeded Spartans will face the second-seeded Western Carolina Catamounts at Catamount Athletic Complex with a 7:00 p.m. start time.  

The Spartans have a 4-11-3 overall record and a 2-4-3 conference mark. The Catamounts concluded the regular season 9-5-4 overall and 5-2-2 in the league, earning the right to host one side of the bracket.

SERIES VS. WESTERN CAROLINA
UNCG is leading the all-time series 25-7-4. The Catamounts have won the last three contests with scores of 2-0 in 2024, 4-0 in 2023 and 4-2 this season. UNCG last won in 2022 during the SoCon Tournament, 2-1, in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
UNCG earned its fifth shutout of the season behind a 2-0 victory over the 10th-seeded VMI Keydets on Tuesday at UNCG Soccer Stadium in the first round of the SoCon Tournament. Ava Kiss tallied her third goal of the season, while Taylor Mentzer registered her third goal and fourth assist of the season.

The Spartans' 28 shots were the most all season and most since Oct. 7, 2018, when UNCG had 33 shots in a 6-2 win over Wofford. The 12 corners were the most this season and most since Aug. 25, 2019, when UNCG had 12 in a 3-3 tie against Campbell.

SPARTANS IN SOCON POSTSEASON
  • UNCG has won eight SoCon Championships since joining the league in 1997, with the last title coming in 2018.
  • In 2024, UNCG defeated No. 10 The Citadel at home, 3-0 before falling to No. 2 Samford in Birmingham, Alabama, 2-1, in a SoCon Quarterfinal game.
  • The 2023 season was the last time UNCG played in a SoCon Championship game. Samford and UNCG tied, 0-0, but the Bulldogs claimed the title after taking the edge in penalty kicks, 6-5.
  • This will be the 10th meeting between UNCG and Western Carolina in the SoCon Tournament. The Spartans are 7-1-1 in SoCon postseason play against the Catamounts.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
  • So far this season, Rina Ogimoto paces the team with 12 points (5G, 2A).
  • Mentzer (3G, 4A) is second on the team with 10 points.
  • Kiss and Ryen Ortiz are fourth with seven points each (3g, 1a).
  • Emma Malone was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7 for her efforts to give UNCG two shutouts with a 1-0 win over Furman and a 0-0 tie to Wofford.
  • UNCG has five shutouts on the season.
  • The Spartans and opponents each have 75 corner kicks on the season, while UNCG's foes have the edge in saves, 79-72.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 5-9-5 overall and 3-3-3 in SoCon.
  • The Spartans were voted to finish sixth in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll, earning 45 points.
  • Redshirt senior midfielder Rachel Poplin was named to the 2025 SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA
  • Western Carolina was voted to win the 2025 SoCon Championship in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll, taking nine of the 10 first-place votes.
  • Isabella DeMarco, Milla Syska, Ava Robitalle, Mary Mueth, Abbie Wise and Leanne Trudel were named to the 2025 SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • The Catamounts concluded the 2024 season 11-5-3 overall and 5-2-2 in SoCon play.  
  • Chattanooga broke Western Carolina's five-game unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory in Cullowhee on Sunday.
  • As a team, they have eight shutouts.
  • DeMarco is first on the team and third in the conference with 25 points (10G, 5A). Her 10 goals are second in the SoCon.
  • Syska leads the team and conference with seven assists. She also has three goals for 13 total points.
  • In net, Trudel has started and played in all 18 games for the Catamounts. She has given up 18 goals for 1.00 goals against average and 78 saves.
  • Nationally, Western Carolina is ranked 17th in shots per game (17.11), 32nd in shots on goal per game (7.56) and 37th in corner kicks per game (6.22).

UP NEXT
The winner of this match will move on to a SoCon Semifinal matchup against the winner of No. 3 ETSU and No. 6 Mercer. The semifinal game will take place on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Catamount Athletic Complex in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
