CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team dropped a 3-1 matchup at Western Carolina Saturday night (25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 24-26) in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action in Cullowhee, North Carolina, at Liston B. Ramsey Regional Activity Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The first frame went back-and-forth in the early goings. However, with Western Carolina in control, 12-11, UNCG recorded seven unanswered points to take a 18-12 lead. One final kill from
McKenna Timmerman secured the first set for the Spartans, 25-17.
Set 2 – The Catamounts found their stride in the second game, gaining an early lead to hold UNCG from taking control until late. With Western Carolina holding an 8-5 lead, UNCG tallied a 7-1 run to take a 12-9 advantage. Later with the Spartans holding a 17-16 lead, the Catamounts strung together three-straight points to regain the advantage, 19-17. Although the remainder of the set stayed closed, Western Carolina was able to hold on to take the frame, 25-22.
Set 3 – The third set was a back-and-forth battle that saw a total of 13 tied scores, coming down to the wire. With the game tied 22-22, Western Carolina was able to seal the third frame with three consecutive points, 25-22.
Set 4 – The Catamounts got out to an early 7-4 lead to never allow the Spartans to take the advantage in the final set. However, with Western Carolina in control, 19-15, a kill from
Robin Rosser began four-straight Spartan points to tie things up, 19-19. Both teams continued to battle, with the remainder of the frame tying on a few occasions, but Western Carolina maintained control. With the set tied 24-24, the Catamounts notched two consecutive points to take the final stanza, 26-24, for the 3-1 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Connore' Siler-Nixon led the Spartans with a career-best 16 kills and added six blocks.
- Timmerman registered her sixth career double-double and third of the season after leading the Spartans with 18 digs and adding 14 kills.
- Timmerman and Gabby Seeds led UNCG with two service aces apiece.
- Five Spartans recorded double-digit digs.
- Seeds led UNCG as the setter with 43 assists.
