SoCon Announces Players of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team saw senior goalkeeper
Emma Malone named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday.
Malone assisted the Spartans to a 1-0-1 week, including a 1-0 victory over Furman at home on Thursday and then a 0-0 draw against Wofford in Spartanburg on Sunday. This was her fourth game this season with a shutout and now has 13 in her career. She brings her season total to 44 saves with 184 in her career.
In the win over Furman, Malone saw 15 shots from the Paladins, with four of them on target and stopping all four shots on goal. The last time UNCG defeated Furman also came in 1-0 win in the 2023 season in Greensboro. The Spartans' win over the Paladins on Thursday ended Furman's 10-game unbeaten streak - their first lost since a 1-0 defeat to South Florida on Aug. 14 in Greenville.
Against the Terriers, Malone only saw three shots with one being on target as her backline also assisted in the shutout.
"Being named Defensive Player of the Week is an awesome honor," stated Malone. "The team and I have been putting in the work on and off the field this season. So, to come away with two clean sheets this week and get recognized for it means a lot. That said, we're not done yet. There is still more work to be done in the remainder of the regular season and I look forward to carrying that momentum into tournament play."
