Men’s Basketball Welcomes Austin Peay to Bodford Arena on Saturday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team returns to Bodford Arena, formerly Fleming Gymnasium, for a Saturday matchup against ASUN foe Austin Peay at 2:00 p.m.  
 
Saturday's meeting will be the third between the two teams, with the Spartans holding a 2-0 record against the Governors. UNCG played Austin Peay twice during 1993, first on Nov. 29, winning 69-66, and then again on Dec. 6, claiming a 90-74 victory.

FLEMING GYMNASIUM RENAMED BODFORD ARENA
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, Fleming Gymnasium, home to UNCG volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball was renamed to Bodford Arena.
  • This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family.
  • This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.  
  • The University is already familiar with the Bodford name - the Bodford Family Speed, Strength & Conditioning Center was dedicated in October 2020.  
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • Wednesday's matchup against NC State was the 13th in program history and first since Dec. 15, 2019.
  • The Pack powered to a 110-64 victory over the Spartans at Lenovo Center.
  • Donald Whitehead Jr. scored a team-best and new season-high 21 points.
  • Justin Neely and Lilian Marville each tallied nine points.
  • Neely recorded a new-season high 13 rebounds, which is one shy of matching his career-high.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • The 2025-26 roster features three returners and 12 newcomers.
  • Six of the 15 student-athletes are international, and this is the biggest international class under fifth-year Head Coach Mike Jones.
  • UNCG was picked to finish fifth in The 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll with 43 votes.  
  • The Spartans will play 10 games in Bodford Arena and four games in the First Horizon Coliseum this season.
  • Among the SoCon, Neely is ranked first in rebounds per game (11.00), second in rebounds (33) and defensive rebounds per game (7.67), third in double-doubles (1), fourth in offensive rebounds per game (3.33), assists (15) and assists per game (5.0).
  • Whitehead is pacing the team with 15.0 points per game, while Neely has 12.3 points per game, Marville is averaging 11.0 per game and KJ Younger is averaging 10.7 to round out the double-figure scorers.
  • Neely is averaging a double-double, adding 11.0 rebounds per game, to pace the team.
  • He is also averaging 5.0 assists per game.
  • UNCG went 20-12 overall and 13-5 in the SoCon in the 2024-25 season.
  • This was the eighth year out of nine with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 14th in three-point percentage defense (30.1), 15th in field goal percentage defense (40.0), 25th in scoring defense (65.4), 26th in turnovers per game (9.9) and 32nd three-point percentage (37.2). 
  • Coach Jones achieved his third year out of four winning 20 or more games last season with the Spartans.
  • UNCG entered the 2025 SoCon Tournament as the second seed, marking the third consecutive year under Jones that the team has secured a top three seed. 
SCOUTING AUSTIN PEAY
  • Head Coach Corey Gipson, in his third season with the Govs, was on former UNCG Head Coach Mike Dement's staff as an assistant coach and associate head coach.  
  • Austin Peay was voted to finish fifth in the 2025-26 ASUN Preseason Coaches' Poll earning one first-place vote, while the Governors were voted to finish seventh in the Media Poll.
  • Tate McCubbin was voted to the 2025-26 Preseason All-ASUN Team.
  • Austin Peay is outscoring opponents, 89.0-60.0, has the advantage in steals per game, 16.0-8.3, blocks per game 3.0-2.3 and three-pointers per game, 11.0-7.0.
  • Foes have the edge over the Govs in rebounding, 41.0-37.3.
  • Three from Austin Peay are averaging double figures, including McCubbin (17.0), Zyree Collins (14.7) and Anton Brookshire (10.0).
  • McCubbin is also pacing the team with 5.0 rebounds per game, while three Govs are averaging 4.0 boards per game.
  • Austin Peay is second in the nation with 16.0 steals per game and 24.67 turnovers forced per game.
  • Matt Enright and McCubbin are leading the ASUN with eight steals and 2.67 steals per game apiece.
  • The Govs concluded the 2024-25 season 14-19 overall and 8-10 in ASUN play.
