GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 18 and third-seeded UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team lost in double overtime to top-seeded Furman, 1-0, in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Championship on Sunday at Stone Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both defenses started the game strong as neither team could set the tone early. The first shot on goal was not taken until the 26th minute mark when Furman headed the ball into the waiting Seth Wilson who easily collected the shot. UNCG answered right back with a shot on goal in the 28th minute by Issah Haruna that the Paladin keeper saved. Neither team fired another shot on goal for the rest of the half to bring it to the half time score of 0-0.
The second half saw the ramping up of physicality with six fouls combined in the first 20 minutes of action. In the 73rd minute, Arnaud Tattevin received the ball on the left side of the box and fired a shot off the top of the crossbar that bounced out of bounds for a corner. The Furman attack was stalled by the Spartan defense as UNCG did not allow a Paladin shot in the entire second half, which kept the game scoreless at the end of regulation.
Play was once again deadlocked, as both teams combined for just one shot in the first overtime period. At the 99:38 mark, Tattevin again whipped a shot outside the box that missed the upper 90 by inches to close out the first overtime period. In the second overtime period, both teams again were evenly matched. However in the 107th minute, Furman took a shot that was saved by Wilson, but there was a Paladin who put the rebound into the back of the net to walk away with the golden goal victory, 1-0.
