Men’s Basketball Takes Short Trip to Battle Queens on Thursday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team will travel down I-85 to face Queens, its third of seven in-state foes, on Thursday night inside Curry Arena at 7:00 p.m.
 
Thursday's meeting will be the fourth between the two teams, with the Royals holding the 2-1 edge. The Spartans took the first victory on Feb. 26, 1990, 68-64, and then the Royals took the sweep in 1991 with scores of 61-56 and 79-77.

FLEMING GYMNASIUM RENAMED BODFORD ARENA
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, Fleming Gymnasium, home to UNCG volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball was renamed to Bodford Arena.
  • This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family.
  • This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.  
  • The University is already familiar with the Bodford name - the Bodford Family Speed, Strength & Conditioning Center was dedicated in October 2020.  
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG and Austin Peay met for just the third time in program history, the first since 1993, on Saturday, Nov. 15 inside Bodford Arena.
  • The Governors took the 69-63 win.
  • Justin Neely registered his second double-double of the season and ninth of his career with 15 points and 14 rebounds. His 14 boards matched his career-best.
  • Valentino Pinedo was the only other Spartan with double-figure points, scoring 12.
  • UNCG outmatched Austin Peay in points off turnovers, 17-11.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • The 2025-26 roster features three returners and 12 newcomers.
  • Six of the 15 student-athletes are international, and this is the biggest international class under fifth-year Head Coach Mike Jones.
  • UNCG was picked to finish fifth in The 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll with 43 votes.
  • The Spartans will play 10 games in Bodford Arena and four games in the First Horizon Coliseum this season.
  • Among the SoCon, Neely is ranked first in rebounds (47), defensive rebounds per game (8.75) and rebounds per game (11.8). He is second in double-doubles (2) and third in minutes per game (33:02).
  • Donald Whitehead Jr. is pacing the team with 13.5 points per game, while Neely has 13.0 points per game and Lilian Marville is averaging 10.0 per game.
  • Neely is averaging a double-double, adding 11.8 rebounds per game, to pace the team.
  • He is also averaging 4.0 assists per game.
  • UNCG went 20-12 overall and 13-5 in the SoCon in the 2024-25 season.
  • This was the eighth year out of nine with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 14th in three-point percentage defense (30.1), 15th in field goal percentage defense (40.0), 25th in scoring defense (65.4), 26th in turnovers per game (9.9) and 32nd three-point percentage (37.2). 
  • Coach Jones achieved his third year out of four winning 20 or more games last season with the Spartans.
  • UNCG entered the 2025 SoCon Tournament as the second seed, marking the third consecutive year under Jones that the team has secured a top three seed. 
SCOUTING QUEENS
  • In just its fourth year in the league, Queens was picked to win the ASUN by the league's coaches, garnering six first-place votes.
  • The Royals were picked third in the media poll behind North Alabama and Eastern Kentucky.
  • Queens ranks 64th in the country and leads the ASUN with 28 threes attempted per game.
  • The Royals sit 10th in the ASUN in rebounding but have won the glass in their last two matchups.
  • The Royals have three averaging double-figures, including Yoav Berman (14.8), Nasir Mann (14.4) and Chris Ashby (14.2).
  • Mann is pacing the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.
  • Berman is averaging 3.0 assists per game to lead the Royals.
  • Ashby is nationally ranked fifth in total three-point field goals made (20), 12th in three-point attempts (46) and 13th in three-pointers per game (4.00).
  • The Royals concluded the 2024-25 season 20-15 overall and 11-7 in the ASUN.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will continue their six-game road slate with three games in Jacksonville, Florida. The first two Youngstown State (Nov. 23 – 6:00 p.m.) and Delaware (Nov. 25 – 2:00 p.m.) will be played as part of the 2025 Jacksonville Classic. The third game against Miami (Ohio) on Nov. 26 at 2:00 p.m. will be a neutral site game. All three games will be played at Edward Waters College.
