ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The fifth-seeded UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team fell to the No. 1 ETSU Buccaneers, 3-1 (18-25, 25-18, 25-27, 23-25) on Saturday evening in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Semifinal round at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, North Carolina.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – ETSU got out to an early 3-0 lead over UNCG to start the match. With the Bucs holding an 8-6 advantage, the Spartans notched a 4-1 run to take the one-point lead, 10-9. However, the Bucs responded with five-straight points to take a 14-10 lead and maintain control for the remainder of the frame. ETSU was able to come away with set one, 25-18.
Set 2 – UNCG found its stride in the second set with the early 2-1 lead. ETSU bounced back with two-straight points for a 3-2 lead, its only one of the set. The Spartans responded with a 2-0 run featuring a kill from
Allie Sweet and an
Gabby Seeds ace for UNCG to hold the lead the rest of the frame. The Spartans led by as much as seven in the game. With UNCG on top, 23-18, kills from
McKenna Timmerman and Sweet, granted the Spartans with set two, 25-18.
Set 3 – The Spartans turned on the jets to start the third set with a 6-1 swing. With UNCG on top, 9-6, ETSU pieced together four unanswered points to take a 10-9 lead, turning the remainder of set three into a back-and-forth battle. The Spartans held the 23-21 lead when ETSU snagged a 3-0 run to take the 24-23 lead, sending the third set to extra rallies. With the game knotted at 25, ETSU was able to secure the next two points to secure set three, 27-25.
Set 4 – ETSU captured the first point of the final set to never allow UNCG to lead again in the match. However, with the Bucs controlling the lead, 21-14, UNCG clawed its way back into the set with a 9-2 run, tying things at 23-23. ETSU was able to collect the next two points to secure set four, 25-23, for the 3-1 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sweet registered her 23rd career double-double and 18th of the season after leading the contest with 22 kills and adding 11 digs.
- Timmerman followed closely behind with 15 kills.
- Seeds paced the match with 38 assists and was one dig shy of a double-double with nine.
- Chloe Nussbaum led the Spartans with 14 digs.
- Graylinn Serge chipped in 10 digs.
- Elenoa Sing led UNCG with four blocks.
