Women’s Basketball Gets Past NC Central, 54-47

DURHAM, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team secured a 54-47 victory over the North Carolina Central (NCCU) Eagles Wednesday at McDougald-McLendon Arena in Durham, North Carolina.
 
Jeni Levine and Jaila Lee paced the contest with 18 and 15 points, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
NCCU's Aniya Finger recorded the first bucket of the game with a jumper at 9:53, 2-0. However, a driving layup from Lee at 8:13 began a 7-0 Spartan run for a 7-2 advantage. The Eagles bounced back with six consecutive points to take their first and only lead until the final quarter, 8-7. Levine launched a three-pointer on the other end before Ciara Harris chipped in a layup at 1:11 to give UNCG the four-point lead, 12-8, heading to the break.
 
The Eagles notched a three-pointer at 9:24 before the Spartans posted an 8-2 run for the seven-point lead, 20-13, at 4:28. UNCG took its biggest lead of the first half with a triple from Levine with 25 seconds remaining, 30-17. NCCU secured the final bucket of the frame, but the Spartans maintained the 11-point lead going into the locker room, 30-19.
 
Lee knocked down a triple at 9:01 to give UNCG the 14-point lead, 33-19. However, NCCU picked up the momentum by responding with a 14-2 run to cut its deficit to two, 35-33. Kristina Rakotobe recorded a layup on the other end to maintain the advantage, 37-33. Both teams traded two free throws apiece to close out the third stanza with UNCG holding the four-point lead, 39-35.

The Eagles recorded the first two baskets of the final frame to tie the contest, 39-39. The game tied three more times after this, but a layup from Tasia Johnson at 2:22 propelled a 9-2 run for the Blue & Gold to come away with the 54-47 victory.
