Men’s Soccer Takes on No. 15 NC State in Third Round of NCAA Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team enters the Third Round, Sweet Sixteen, of the 2025 NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in its DI history. The Spartans return to Raleigh, North Carolina to rematch 15th seed North Carolina State at Dail Stadium on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. 

Game 23: UNC Greensboro (12-4-6, 3-2-0 SoCon) vs. No. 15 NC State (13-2-4, 4-1-3ACC)

SERIES HISTORY VS NC STATE   
This matchup dates to 1980, when UNCG was still in DIII. The series is tied 5-5-1 all-time. The last matchup was on Oct. 23, where then-ranked No. 3 NC State drew UNCG in Raleigh, North Carolina. Enzo Dovlo scored the only goal for the Spartans in the 55th minute and goalkeeper Seth Wilson saved 10 shots in the match.  

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS    

UNCG drew No. 2 Virginia 2-2 after double overtime then defeated the Cavaliers, 4–3, in penalty kicks Sunday night at Klöckner Stadium. Issah Haruna was named TopDrawer Soccer Midfielder of the Week after recording one goal and one assist in the match.  
    
SPARTANS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT    

  • This is UNCG's 11th bid into the DI tournament with the last time being in 2022.   

  • This is the Spartans' fifth appearance in the third round of the NCAA tournament. Their last appearance being in 2022 where the Spartans defeated No. 5 Stanford 3-1 in penalties.  

  • In program history, this is the 20th appearance in NCAA play with UNCG owning five DIII championships in 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986 and 1987.    

  • This is the third time in UNCG's Division I history that it is an at-large selection, with the two previous being 1998 and 2004.   

  • The Blue & Gold holds an 8-9-5 record in NCAA Division I Tournament play.    

  • The Spartans are 5-1 all-time in penalty shootouts in the DI NCAA Tournament.  

  
ABOUT THE SPARTANS       

  • The Spartans boasted the second-most All-SoCon players in the league this season with nine honorees. 

  • Under Head Coach Chris Rich, the Spartans are 3-3-5 against Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents. 

  • Dovlo is second on the Spartans in goals with 10 and first in assists with eight for a team leading 28 points.    

  • Arnaud Tattevin is leading the team and is tenth in the nation in goals with 12, while also having two assists on the season. He was sixth in the nation in game winning goals before the start of the NCAA Tournament.  During the SoCon Tournament, he scored four goals in three games played and was named to the All-Tournament team.     

  • This is the first time since 2006 where two Spartans have had 10 plus goals in a season.     

  • Daniel Longo is second on the team in assists with six this season.  

  • Wilson has the third most total saves in the Tournament with 11, the ninth best saves per game at 5.50 and the 14th best save percentage at .846. He has also held opposition to 6 of 10 penalty kicks made so far in the Tournament as well.  

  • Sami Lachekar has played the most minutes for the Spartans outside of goalkeeper Wilson with 1936 minutes logged.  

  • UNCG faced the ninth toughest out of conference schedule in the nation this season, going against nine teams inside the top 100 in RPI.   

  • UNCG boasts the 14th best goal differential in the nation at plus 14.   

  •  The trio of Dovlo, Tattevin and Hernandez have scored 28 out of the 45 goals this season.     

  •  The Spartans boast one of the best offenses in the nation and are ranked sixth in total goals (45), 13th in total points (129), 21st in scoring offense (2.05), 25th in total assists (37) and 30th in points per game (5.86).    

  • The squad boasts 11 returners from last season and nine seniors.   

SCOUTING NC STATE   

  • NC State finished third in the ACC with a 4-1-3 conference record.  

  • The Wolfpack picked up three out of four Player of Year awards in the ACC. They secured ACC Offensive Player of Year Donavon Phillips, ACC Defensive Player of the Year Nikola Markovic and ACC Goalkeeper of the Year Logan Erb. 

  • The Wolfpack are led by Phillips who is second in the nation in goals with 16 and eighth in the nation in points with 33.  

  • Riley Mahoney is NC State's second leading scorer and primary playmaker this season with two goals and eight assists.  

  • Other notable offensive threats for the Wolfpack include Justin McLean and Aiden Payne, each with three goals and four assists.   

  • Logan Erb is first in the ACC and third in the nation in shutouts with eight.  

  • The Wolfpack are currently 9-2-3 at home this year.  

  • Head Coach Mark Hubbard enters his second year with the Wolfpack going 23-7-9 in his time there.     

  • NC State ranks in the top five in the nation in goal differential (35/2nd), save percentage (.863/4th), shots per game (19.58/2nd), shutout percentage (.737/1st) and team goals against average (.368/1st).

The winner of the third-round match will play the winner of No. 7 Georgetown versus No. 10 High Point on Friday, Dec. 5th or Sunday, Dec. 6th. The highest seed remaining will host the match.
