GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team will continue The Southern Conference (SoCon) action this weekend with a couple road contests. The Spartans will face Mercer on Friday at 6:00 p.m. in Macon, Georgia, at Hawkins Arena and The Citadel on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Charleston, South Carolina, inside McAlister Field House.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG collected back-to-back sweeps last weekend with victories over Western Carolina and Chattanooga in Fleming Gymnasium.
- The Spartans now have seven straight-set sweeps this season, marking the most three-set wins for UNCG since 2021, when the team had 11 matches with 3-0 victories.
- With Saturday's win over the Mocs, the Spartans improve to 10-2 at home, marking the best record in Fleming Gym since the 2017 season as that team went 12-6 overall at home that year.
- Gabby Seeds notched 73 assists for a 12.17 assists per set average in six sets played on the week to earn her second SoCon Setter of the Week nod on Monday.
- McKenna Timmerman paced the Spartans with a .328 hitting percentage last week. She notched 27 kills for a 4.50 kills average in six sets played.
- Chloe Nussbaum stood out defensively for the Spartans with 28 digs for a 4.67 digs per set average in six sets played.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
- The Spartans come into the weekend with a 14-9 overall record and 7-5 mark in the SoCon.
- UNCG is currently tied for fourth place in the SoCon standings with Chattanooga.
- The last time UNCG captured seven SoCon wins was in the 2021 season as that squad went 12-4 in conference play.
- UNCG stands out in the top-50 nationally in digs per set (31st/16.12) and total digs (35th/1,467).
- The squad is pacing the SoCon in aces per set (1.68), digs per set (16.12), assists (1,009), digs (1,467) and service aces (153).
- Allie Sweet is currently ranked in the top-20 nationally among six statistical categories: attacks per set (2nd/12.84), total attacks (3rd/1,168), points (11th/468.0), total kills (11th/408), points per set (17th/5.14) and kills per set (20th/4.48).
- Sweet is leading the SoCon in attacks per set (12.84), kills per set (4.48), points (468.0), points per set (5.14), total attacks (1,168) and total kills (408).
- Nussbaum stands out nationally at 28th in total digs (428) and 31st in digs per set (4.70).
- Seeds is 54th in the country and second in the SoCon with a 9.76 assists per set average.
- Seeds reached the 1,000-career assist milestone in the team's reverse sweep win over UNC Asheville on Sept. 20 in Greensboro.
- The Spartans have collected six SoCon Player of the Week mentions this season: Seeds (Oct. 20 & Nov. 3), Siler-Nixon (Oct. 6), Sweet (Sept. 1 & Sept. 15) and Nussbaum (Sept. 1).
- The 2025 squad features 10 returners and six newcomers. Out of the six newcomers, four are transfer students and two are freshmen.
- UNCG was picked to finish the SoCon regular season in a tie for fifth place with Chattanooga.
- Sweet was selected to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
- Sweet's preseason nod comes after being named SoCon Freshman of the Year, while also being voted to the All-SoCon First Team and All-Freshman Team last season.
SCOUTING MERCER
- Mercer comes into the week at sixth place in the SoCon with an 8-17 overall record and 4-8 conference mark.
- The Bears are coming off two consecutive wins last week after defeating The Citadel, 3-0, in Charleston on Thursday and Furman, 3-1 in Macon on Saturday.
- Sammi Bergjans is second in the SoCon with 32 service aces and a 0.39 service aces per set average.
- Bergjans is the leading setter on the squad with 423 assists.
- Aubri Martin is second in the league with a 4.74 digs per set average.
- Martin and Joselynn Sanjurjo are leading the team defensively with 411 digs and 74.0 total blocks, respectively.
- Sophia Henry is pacing the Bears offensively with 262 kills this season.
- Henry was tabbed to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
- Mercer was picked to finish eighth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
SERIES HISTORY VS MERCER
The Spartans hold the slight edge over the Bears at 14-13 in the overall meetings as UNCG took the previous matchup this season, 3-1, in Greensboro on Oct. 11.
SCOUTING THE CITADEL
- The Citadel is currently in last place in the SoCon standings at 0-22 overall and 0-12 in conference.
- Rachel Reininger is leading the Bulldogs with 188 kills and 14 service aces.
- Greta Pleuss is the best setter on the team with 363 assists.
- Luci Lippelogoos and Jess Martin are pacing the team defensively with 65.0 total blocks and 199 digs, respectively.
- The Bulldogs were picked to finish seventh in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- The Citadel will host ETSU on Friday at 6:00 p.m. before taking on UNCG on Saturday.
SERIES HISTORY VS THE CITADEL
UNCG leads the overall series against The Citadel, 35-13. The Spartans took the five-set thrilling contest over the Bulldogs in the two team's meeting earlier this season on Oct. 10 in Greensboro.
