GREENSBORO, N.C. – The No. 20 and third-seeded UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's soccer team defeated sixth-seeded VMI, 5-1, in the first round of The Southern Conference (SoCon) Tournament on Friday at Betts Stadium in Macon, Georgia. Arnaud Tattevin recorded his second career hat trick in the first half, while Enzo Dovlo and Colton Sessoms each added a goal for the Spartans.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half saw the Spartans come out with something to prove when they scored in the tenth minute of action. Dovlo received a pass from Steven Hernandez and then darted inside and, from 20 yards out, buried a shot bottom left corner to put UNCG up 1-0. The Keydets' defense had no time to regroup as in the 16th minute, the French connection of Dovlo to Tattevin extended the lead to 2-0. Three minutes later, good one-two passing from Daniel Longo and Hernandez found Tattevin in the box, who banked a shot off the post and into the back of the net to put the Spartans up 3-0. The Frenchmen linked up again in the 29th minute, as Dovlo sent a clever chip to a speedy Tattevin. Tattevin then coolly put the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-0, earning him his second career hat-trick. VMI earned a goal back on a counter in the 32nd minute before the end of the half to make the score 4-1 heading into the break.
The second half saw multiple substitutions made by the Spartans with freshmen Mason Dancy, Mason Poveromo, Trym Linberg and Sigurd Sæveraas making their postseason debuts. The VMI attack came to life in the half with three shots on goal, but goalkeeper Seth Wilson was up to task, making all three saves. The Spartans capped off the night with a goal from senior Sessoms to bring the match to the final score of 5-1.
"Great overall performance tonight. We wanted to get off to a great start and we did that with 4 goals in first 30 minutes," said Head Coach Chris Rich. "We were able to manage loads and make a lot of changes, which was key for our preparation for Sunday. I'm grateful that all players approached this game. Now full focus for Mercer."
