Men’s Basketball & UNC Asheville Face Off in Neutral Game at Harrah’s Cherokee Center Tuesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team continues its six-game road slate with a neutral site contest against in-state foe UNC Asheville on Tuesday at Harrah's Cherokee Center starting at 7:00 p.m.

UNCG leads the overall series against the Bulldogs, 9-4. The Spartans have won the last three-straight contests, with the last victory on Dec. 19, 2016, 75-73. The Bulldogs last won on Feb. 20, 1997, 74-67.

FLEMING GYMNASIUM RENAMED BODFORD ARENA
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, Fleming Gymnasium, home to UNCG volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball was renamed to Bodford Arena.
  • This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family.
  • This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.  
  • The University is already familiar with the Bodford name - the Bodford Family Speed, Strength & Conditioning Center was dedicated in October 2020.  
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG returns to North Carolina following three games in the Sunshine State, where the Spartans picked up their first win of the season, a 68-62 victory over Youngstown State.
  • The Blue & Gold later fell to Delaware, 73-60, and Miami (Ohio), 82-71.
  • In the latter against the Penguins, UNCG saw Justin Neely record his fourth double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
  • KJ Younger led the team with 14 points, while Assane Mandian rounded out UNCG's double-figure scorers with a career-best 11 points.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • The 2025-26 roster features three returners and 12 newcomers.
  • Six of the 15 student-athletes are international, and this is the biggest international class under fifth-year Head Coach Mike Jones.
  • UNCG was picked to finish fifth in The 2025 Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll with 43 votes.  
  • The Spartans will play 10 games in Bodford Arena and four games in the First Horizon Coliseum this season.
  • Among the SoCon, Neely is leading the league in rebounds (92), defensive rebounds per game (8.75) and rebounds per game (11.5).
  • He is also nationally ranked third in defensive rebounds per game, fourth in rebounds and rebounds per game and 11th in double-doubles (4).
  • Neely is pacing the team with a double-double, averaging 13.5 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game to sit atop the team.
  • Two other Spartans are averaging double-figures, including Whitehead Jr. with 12.8 and Younger with 12.1.
  • UNCG went 20-12 overall and 13-5 in the SoCon in the 2024-25 season.
  • This was the eighth year out of nine with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 14th in three-point percentage defense (30.1), 15th in field goal percentage defense (40.0), 25th in scoring defense (65.4), 26th in turnovers per game (9.9) and 32nd three-point percentage (37.2). 
  • Coach Jones achieved his third year out of four winning 20 or more games last season with the Spartans.
  • UNCG entered the 2025 SoCon Tournament as the second seed, marking the third consecutive year under Jones that the team has secured a top three seed. 
SCOUTING UNC ASHEVILLE
  • Asheville concluded the 2024-25 season with a 21-11 overall record and 11-5 in the Big South.
  • The Bulldogs were voted to finish second in the 2025-26 Big South Conference Blue Ribbon Forecast, falling behind High Point.
  • Toyaz Solomon was voted 2025-26 Big South Preseason Player of the Year and to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Asheville is coming off a 67-55 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday for its third victory of the season.
  • There are four Bulldogs averaging double-figures, with Justin Wright pacing the team 17.6 points per game.
  • Kameron Taylor is second with 16.6 points per game, Solomon is third with 16.4 points per game and Connor Dubsky is averaging 15.0 points per game.
  • Solomon is leading the team with 6.9 rebounds per game.
  • Wright and Taylor are averaging 2.8 assists per game each.
  • Among the nation, the Bulldogs are 39th in three-point percentage defense (27.9) and 60th in field goal percentage (48.9).
  • The Bulldogs have the edge over their opponents in points per game, 74.6-70.9, field goal percentage, 48.9-42.6, and three-point percentage, 34.9-27.9.
