Men’s Basketball Begins Five-Game Home Stretch with William Peace on Friday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team is set to begin a five-game home stretch this Friday beginning with William Peace inside Bodford Arena at 7:00 p.m. This game will be an exhibition for the Pacers.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two teams with UNCG leading the all-time series 3-0. The Spartans claimed an 86-37 victory on Dec. 17, 2024 in Greensboro.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG secured an 82-78 victory over in-state foe East Carolina on Saturday inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.
  • Justin Neely and Lilian Marville both recorded season highs.
  • Neely scored 23 points and eight rebounds to pace the Spartans, while Marville tallied 22 points.
  • Donald Whitehead Jr. had four assists for a game high, while chipping in eight points and two steals.
  • UNCG shot 87.5 percent (21-for-24) from the free-throw line, for its highest of the season.
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • Neely is pacing the team with a double-double, averaging 14.0 points per game and 11.0 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 2.9 assists and 1.1 steals per game to sit atop the team.
  • Among the SoCon, Neely is leading the league in rebounds (110), defensive rebounds per game (8.20) and rebounds per game (11.0).
  • He is also nationally ranked third in rebounds, fifth in defensive rebounds per game and seventh in rebounds per game.
  • Whitehead Jr. (12.3), Younger (11.2) and Marville (10.3) round out the Spartans averaging double-figure points.
  • Neely was voted The Southern Conference (SoCon) Player of the Week on Nov. 24 after averaging a double-double with 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week in Florida.
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in free throw attempts per game (26.2) and free throws made per game (18.1).
  • The 2025-26 roster features three returners and 12 newcomers.
  • Six of the 15 student-athletes are international, which is the largest international class under fifth-year Head Coach Mike Jones.
  • UNCG was picked to finish fifth in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with 43 votes.  
  • The Spartans will play 10 games in Bodford Arena and four games in the First Horizon Coliseum this season.
  • UNCG went 20-12 overall and 13-5 in the SoCon in the 2024-25 season.
  • This was the eighth year out of nine with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 14th in three-point percentage defense (30.1), 15th in field goal percentage defense (40.0), 25th in scoring defense (65.4), 26th in turnovers per game (9.9) and 32nd three-point percentage (37.2). 
  • Coach Jones achieved his third year out of four winning 20 or more games last season with the Spartans.
  • UNCG entered the 2025 SoCon Tournament as the second seed, marking the third consecutive year under Jones that the team has secured a top three seed. 
SCOUTING WILLIAM PEACE
  • The Pacers concluded the 2024-25 season 5-20 overall and 3-11 in the USA South Conference.
  • William Peace has won two-straight games, including a 78-61 victory over Warren Wilson and a 79-60 win over Johnson & Wales (N.C.).
  • The Pacers are outscoring their opponents 72.4-68.9.
  • William Peace also has the advantage in three-pointers made per game (8.6-5.4), rebounds per game (43.1-33.1), assists per game (13.4-8.7) and blocks per game (3.7-2.1).
  • Four are averaging double figure points: Parker Hodgson (15.0), Elijah Green (13.3), Elijah Cathcart (11.0) and Shawn Jones (10.3).
  • Hodgson is also pacing the team with 11.2 rebounds per game.
  • Hodgson is nationally ranked third in defensive rebounds per game (9.33) and 15th in rebounds per game (11.2).
  • Green averages a team-best 3.0 assists per game.
  • The Pacers are leading the USA South in field goal percentage defense (40.4), fouls per game (15.6), rebound margin (10.0), defensive rebounds per game (12.0) and rebounds per game (43.14).
  • They are in the top 30 nationally in defensive rebounds per game (15th), rebound margin (16th) and rebounds per game (28th).
FLEMING GYMNASIUM RENAMED BODFORD ARENA
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, Fleming Gymnasium, home to UNCG volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball was renamed to Bodford Arena.
  • This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family.
  • This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.  
  • The University is already familiar with the Bodford name - the Bodford Family Speed, Strength & Conditioning Center was dedicated in October 2020.
