Women’s Basketball Wins Defensive Battle Against Elon, 54-50

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team claimed a heavy defensive battle against the Elon Phoenix on Wednesday night, 54-50, inside Bodford Arena.
 
The win over the Phoenix marks 22-straight home wins for the Spartans and makes the team 33-1 over the past two seasons.
 
Jeni Levine, Leyla Minor and Jaila Lee paced the Spartans in double-figures. Levine led the way with 17 points, while Minor and Lee chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first frame went back-and-forth in the early goings. However, with the game tied, 8-8 at 2:28, Levine and Minor secured a layup apiece to give the Spartans a four-point advantage, 12-8, at the conclusion of the first quarter.
 
Both teams traded baskets and Elon chipped in a free throw at 8:34 before a jumper from Levine began an 8-0 Spartan run for a 22-11 lead at 4:56. The Phoenix closed the gap to four with seven-straight points to make it 22-18 UNCG at 1:29. Minor secured the final basket of the half with a layup at the seven-second mark to give UNCG the six-point lead heading to the locker room, 24-18.
 
UNCG turned on the jets coming out of the break, starting things off with 11 unanswered points. However, after the Phoenix called a timeout, the visiting team concluded the third quarter with a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to five going to the huddle, 39-34.
 
Elon knocked down a triple at 8:31 to make it a two-point game, 39-37. However, Tasia Johnson responded on the other end with a triple of her own at 7:21, 44-37. The remainder of the contest was a point-for-point duel with UNCG holding the slight edge throughout. Elon came back within two points on three occasions, but UNCG continued to maintain the advantage. With the Spartans in control, 52-50, Levine went 2-for-2 at the free throw line to grant the squad with the 54-50 victory.

  • Rylan Moffitt led the way with two blocks.
  • Ciara Harris led with three steals.
  • UNCG led the way in points off turnovers (18-38), rebounds (38-24), second chance points (15-9), points in the paint (42-20) and assists (8-5).
  • Elon held the edge in bench points (23-16), fast break points (8-4), blocks (5-2) and steals (11-10).
