SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team secured its third-straight win with a commanding 70-39 victory over USC Upstate on Saturday in G.B. Hodge Center in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
This marks the fourth consecutive win over USC Upstate in the overall series.
Four Spartans reached double-figures in the contest.
Rylan Moffitt led the charge with 14 points, while
Makiah Asidanya followed closely behind with 12 points.
Jeni Levine and
Jaila Lee chipped in 11 points apiece.
HOW IT HAPPENED
USC Upstate got on the board first with a jumper at 9:23 for its only lead of the contest. Triples from Levine and
Tasia Johnson propelled the Blue & Gold to a 14-1 run for the remainder of the first quarter. After Johnson went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe at 6:28, both teams went on a scoring draught for over three minutes. Moffitt knocked down a couple free throws to conclude the first quarter with UNCG holding a 14-3 advantage.
Both teams stayed scoreless for the first couple minutes of the second quarter before Lee secured the steal to snag a jumper at 7:49 to make it 17-3 UNCG. UNCG continued to outscore Upstate, 20-9 in the second quarter. A 6-2 run coming from Moffitt alone closed out the first half with UNCG on top, 35-12.
The third quarter was the most evenly matched, but UNCG still managed to outscore USC Upstate, 17-15. A free throw apiece from Asidanya and Johnson concluded the frame for UNCG to hold a 52-27 lead going to the bench.
Back-to-back buckets from Moffitt began a 12-3 run for the Blue & Gold to start the final stanza. USC Upstate's Madison Miller secured the final basket of the game with 26 seconds remaining. However, it wouldn't be enough to hold off UNCG from securing the 70-39 victory.
