WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team fell to the Wolves of West Georgia on Saturday, 3-2, (28-26, 22-25, 25-20, 19-25, 12-15) to conclude its time at the UNC Wilmington (UNCW) Invitational in Wilmington, North Carolina, in Hanover Hall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 – The first frame was a back-and-forth battle that saw a total of 19 tied scores and seven lead changes throughout.
Allie Sweet notched 10 kills in the first frame alone out of the Spartans' 18. With UNCG in control, 23-22, West Georgia put two consecutive points on the board to tie things up at 23-23. Both teams looked for two points in a row to win the match. Finally, with the frame tied at 26-26, kills from
Aylin Baran and Sweet gave the Spartans the first game, 28-26.
Set 2 – The Wolves took the first point of the second set before the Spartans posted three-straight points for a 3-1 lead. Later with UNCG in control, 7-6, West Georgia recorded two unanswered points to take a one-point lead, 8-7, and never allow UNCG to regain the advantage in the second frame. West Georgia eventually took the second set, 25-22.
Set 3 – West Georgia got out to an early lead after collecting the first couple points in the third stanza. However, with the Wolves in control, 7-5, the Spartans notched four-straight points to take the lead, 9-7 and hold it for the remainder of the game. Three consecutive points that featured a kill from Sweet, solo block from
Siena Smiejek and ended with a service ace from
Gabby Seeds secured set three for the Spartans, 25-20.
Set 4 – The Wolves picked up the momentum in the fourth set, never allowing UNCG to take a lead. Although the frame tied on a few occasions, West Georgia was able to take the fourth game, 25-19, tying the match at two sets apiece.
Set 5 – The Spartans picked up the first point of the final set thanks to a service error from West Georgia. The Wolves quickly responded with a 5-0 run, never allowing the Spartans to lead again. With the Wolves on top, 12-8, UNCG inched its way back into the game with a 3-0 run, making it a one-point game, 12-11. However, West Georgia bounced back with a 3-1 run, taking the fifth stanza, 15-12, for the 3-2 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Sweet recorded her 10th career double-double and fifth of the season after matching her career-best of 27 kills and adding 11 digs.
- Chloe Nussbaum led the match with 24 digs.
- Seeds was the Spartans' leading setter with 50 assists.
- Sweet, Nussbaum and Seeds collected two service aces apiece.
- Smiejek led the team at the net with four total blocks.

The Spartans return to Greensboro next weekend to conclude the 2025 non-conference slate in Fleming Gymnasium with the Battle of North Carolina on Sept. 19-20. UNCG will face North Carolina A&T on Friday, Sept. 19 at 6:00 p.m. and UNC Asheville on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 6:00 p.m.
