Women’s Basketball Falls in Defensive Battle at Furman, 69-56

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team fell in a defensive battle with the Furman Paladins, 69-56, on Thursday night in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action in Timmons Arena.
 
Jaila Lee and Makiah Asidanya paced the Spartans in double-figures with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Asidanya tallied the first points of the contest, going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe at 9:27. The Paladins took their first lead with three-straight free throws at 7:09, 3-2. Both teams exchanged five points apiece as the score toggled back-and-forth in the first quarter. The Spartans secured a 5-0 run that featured a layup from Ciara Harris, followed by Kristina Rakotobe's first collegiate three-pointer to close out the first frame on top, 17-13.
 
At 8:42, Lee tallied the first bucket of the second quarter to assure Furman never regained a lead in the half. At 5:10 on the clock, a triple from Tasia Johnson began a 10-0 Spartan run for a 32-22 advantage at 3:02. Three points apiece from both teams concluded the first half with the Spartans holding a 35-25 lead.
 
Furman turned the tides, coming out of the locker room to outscore UNCG 21-9 in the third period. After a layup from Rylan Moffitt at 9:17, the Paladins tallied a 17-0 run for a 42-37 lead with three minutes on the board. Four-straight free throws, following a three-pointer from Asidanya regained UNCG's lead, 44-42 with 54 seconds on the clock. Furman closed out the frame with three-straight points to give for a 46-44 lead at the break.
 
The Paladins continued their momentum into the final stanza to outscore the Spartans, 23-12. UNCG brought the contest back within three on a few different occasions, but Furman maintained the advantage. A 7-0 run from Furman secured the 69-56 win for the Paladins.
