Men’s Basketball Travels to Wofford & ETSU

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team continues The Southern Conference (SoCon) slate with road games against Wofford and ETSU this week.

The Spartans and Terriers will face off on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. on Nexstar affiliates and ESPN+ at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. UNCG will then travel to face ETSU on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. start time at Freedom Hall.

Wofford has the edge in the series, 33-24. The two teams split the series last year, where UNCG won, 68-66, on the road and the Terriers defeated the Spartans, 74-62, in Greensboro.

ETSU holds the slight advantage over UNCG, 24-21. The two teams split the series last year, where UNCG won, 70-65, in Greensboro and ETSU claimed a win with a score of 65-49 in Tennessee.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
  • UNCG won its first two SoCon games to begin the conference slate with victories over Chattanooga, 77-72, and Samford, 89-82, at home inside Bodford Arena.  
  • Against the Bulldogs, four Spartans reached double-figures with Justin Neely leading the way with 22 points and 14 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season and 16th of his career.
  • Noah Norgaard was second on the team after dropping a career best 17 points and Donald Whitehead Jr. and KJ Younger rounded out the double-figure scoring with 15 points each.
  • UNCG bested Samford in bench points (17-12), fast break points (12-10), points off turnovers (12-4), three-pointers made (11-10) and three-point percentage (69%-33%).
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
  • This is the Spartans' fourth-straight year starting SoCon play 2-0.
  • Neely is pacing the team with a double-double, averaging 15.6 points per game and 11.4 rebounds per game. He is also averaging 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game to sit atop the team.
  • Among the SoCon, Neely is leading the league in double-doubles (9), rebounds (171), defensive rebounds per game (8.40) and rebounds per game (11.4).
  • He is also nationally ranked second in rebounds, third in defensive rebounds per game, fourth in rebounds per game and fifth in double-doubles.
  • Younger (13.4) and Whitehead Jr. (12.5) round out the Spartans averaging double-figure points.
  • Whitehead Jr. is second on the team averaging 2.7 assists per game.  
  • Neely was voted SoCon Player of the Week on Nov. 24 after averaging a double-double with 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week in Florida.
  • UNCG is leading the SoCon in free throw attempts per game (25.3), free throws made per game (17.5) and three-point percentage (35.7).
  • The Spartans are second in the conference in scoring offense (79.0).
  • The 2025-26 roster features three returners and 11 newcomers.
  • Six of the 14 student-athletes are international, which is the largest international class under fifth-year Head Coach Mike Jones.
  • UNCG was picked to finish fifth in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with 43 votes.  
  • The Spartans will play 10 games in Bodford Arena and four games in the First Horizon Coliseum this season.
  • UNCG went 20-12 overall and 13-5 in the SoCon in the 2024-25 season.
  • This was the eighth year out of nine with 20 or more wins for the Spartans.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024-25 season ranked 14th in three-point percentage defense (30.1), 15th in field goal percentage defense (40.0), 25th in scoring defense (65.4), 26th in turnovers per game (9.9) and 32nd three-point percentage (37.2). 
  • Coach Jones achieved his third year out of four winning 20 or more games last season with the Spartans.
  • UNCG entered the 2025 SoCon Tournament as the second seed, marking the third consecutive year under Jones that the team has secured a top three seed. 
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
  • Wofford was voted to finish ninth in the 2025-26 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The Terriers are also coming off three-straight wins, similar to the Spartans.
  • Wofford defeated Western Carolina, 79-74, and The Citadel, 95-86, to begin SoCon play last week.
  • Kahmare Holmes is leading the team with 16.5 points per game, while Nils Machowski is second with 15.5 points per game.
  • Holmes is also leading the team with 6.0 rebounds per game and 2.5 steals per game.
  • Brian Sumpter paces the team with 2.5 blocks per game, while Cayden Vasko averages 3.8 assists per game.
  • Wofford has the edge over its opponents in points per game (76.9-74.3), three pointers per game (9.2-7.3), free throws per game (16.5-14.1), assists per game (14.7-12.2) and points off turnovers per game (14.2-11.9).
  • The Terriers concluded the 2024-25 season 19-16 overall and 10-8 in the SoCon.
  • They won the 2025 SoCon Championship, defeating No. 5 Furman, 92-85, and received their sixth bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers fell to No. 2 Tennessee, 77-62, in the first round.
SCOUTING THE BUCS
  • ETSU was voted to finish fourth in the 2025-26 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. 
  • Jaylen Smith was voted to the 2025-26 Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • The Bucs will host VMI on Wednesday before welcoming the Spartans.
  • ETSU is coming off two-straight wins, earning a 74-49 victory over The Citadel and a 77-71 defeat over Mercer.
  • Brian Taylor II is leading the Bucs with 14.6 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game.
  • Three other Bucs are averaging double figures, including Cam Morris III (13.3), Blake Barkley (12.4) and Smith (10.3).
  • Allen Strothers is averaging 3.5 assists per game.
  • ETSU is leading the SoCon in field goal percentage (48.3), field goal percentage defense (40.6), scoring defense (66.5), scoring margin (11.6), steals per game (9.7), turnovers forced per game (14.53) and winning percentage (66.7).
  • The Bucs are nationally ranked 22nd in steals per game and 39th in scoring defense.  
  • ETSU has the edge over its opponents in points per game (78.1-66.5), field goals per game (28.3-22.8), free throws per game (13.8-12.5), rebounds per game (35.2-32.6), assists per game (14.7-12.6), points off turnovers (18.5-12.4) and steals (9.7-7.1).
  • The Bucs concluded the 2024-25 season 19-13 overall and 12-6 in the SoCon.
FLEMING GYMNASIUM RENAMED BODFORD ARENA
  • On Saturday, Nov. 8, Fleming Gymnasium, home to UNCG volleyball, women's basketball and men's basketball was renamed to Bodford Arena.
  • This historic moment for the department was made possible through a transformational $2 million gift from the Bodford family.
  • This generous support represents the largest unrestricted gift in the history of UNCG Athletics, as well as the first associated with naming a competitive athletic facility.  
  • The University is already familiar with the Bodford name - the Bodford Family Speed, Strength & Conditioning Center was dedicated in October 2020.
