Softball Edged by App State, 7-6 in Extra Innings

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team was defeated by in-state foe Appalachian State 7-6 in nine innings at UNCG Softball Stadium in the Spartans' home opener on Thursday.
  • The Spartans had a quick top of the first inning, retiring the Mountaineers and took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the frame on two hits and one error.
  • After Kaylyn Belfield singled to lead off, Macy Michael was called out before Betsy Eatmon's shallow hit to right field brought in Belfield for a 1-0 advantage.
  • Laney Deane then crushed her first homer of the season, a two-run bullet over the left field wall putting UNCG up 3-0.
  • App State responded in the third inning, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1, with Makayla McClain's solo home run.
  • UNCG's Nya South sent a long ball over the center field wall in the bottom of the fourth for her second homer of the season, giving the Spartans a 4-1 advantage.
  • Both teams had a solo home run in the fifth inning for a 5-2 score.
  • Avery Bouquin tallied her first blast of her collegiate career in that inning.
  • App State tied the game, 5-5, in the sixth behind a two-run homer from Madison McIntyre and then a solo shot from Madison Fletcher.
  • After a scoreless seventh inning, the Mountaineers were able to take their first lead of the game, 6-5, in the top of the eighth on a fielder's choice with two outs.
  • The Spartans continued to fight and after a collision in the outfield, UNCG had runners on first and third with no outs. Deane was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and South hit a sacrifice fly to right field tying the game once more, 6-6.
  • In the top of the ninth, App State had a runner on second with one out and Macy Hamby hit a hard ball to left field and Julia Girk ran all the way home for the eventual go-ahead run, 7-6. UNCG was able to retire the side, leaving the Mountaineers to strand two runners on base.
  • With one last go around, the Spartans were unable to get anything started, giving App State its fifth-straight win.
