Softball Defeats Columbia, 8-3, & Blanks Fairfield, 6-0

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated Columbia, 8-3, and Fairfield, 6-0, on Friday at the UNCG Softball Stadium during the Spiro Classic.

The 6-0 victory was the first shutout of the season for the Spartans. In the win against the Lions, UNCG tallied 11 hits and then the Spartans also recorded a season-best 12 hits against the Stags, bringing their total to three games with double-figure knocks.

GAME 1: UNCG 8 – Columbia 3
  • After two scoreless innings, the Spartans capitalized on three hits to score four runs in the bottom of the third.

  • Nya South then sent out her third homer of the season, bringing in Deane for a 4-0 advantage.
  • In the top of the fourth, UNCG's defense kept the Lions from scoring on a relay from center field for the first out. But then on Payton Shimansky's RBI single to right field, Tatum Hubble scored Columbia's first run of the game, 4-1
  • The Spartans broke the game open with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 8-1.
  • UNCG retired two Lions in the top of the seventh, but Kyra Mason took the first pitch and sent it over the wall cutting the deficit to 8-3.
  • In the circle, UNCG's Nadia Andarowski was able to hold on for her first win as a Spartan, walking the next batter but then recording a fly out.
