Neely Scores Career-High as Western Carolina Gets Past Men’s Basketball

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team fell to The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Western Carolina, 91-77, on Wednesday night at Ramsey Center.

Justin Neely led the game with a career-best 35 points. He was one of four Spartans to score double figures in the game, as Noah Norgaard had 13 points, Clinton Efinda had 11 points and KJ Younger had 10 points.

Neely is the second Spartan to record 30 or more points this season, as Younger dropped 30 points at Mercer on Jan. 29.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Western Carolina got out to an 8-2 advantage in the first three minutes of the game. UNCG then went on a 13-0 run to lead the game by seven, 15-8. The Catamounts fought back with a 12-0 run, giving Western Carolina a five-point cushion, 20-15, with 10:13 left in the half. That advantage kept UNCG from regaining the lead before halftime.

UNCG began the second half with an 11-3 run to cut the deficit to one, 48-47, just five minutes in. The Spartans were able to trim the gap to one, once more, following five-straight points from Younger, 57-56, with 11:51 on the clock. For the next 10 minutes, UNCG stayed within single digits, but Western Carolina closed the game with six free throws to secure the 91-77 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Neely added four assists and eight rebounds to his stat line.
  • Western Carolina held the advantage in field goal percentage (52.5-51.9), three point percentage (46.2-36.8) and free throw percentage (77.3-70.0).
  • The Catamounts outmatched the Spartans in rebounds (31-28), second chance points (17-2) and fast break points (13-11).
  • The Spartans had the edge in bench points (16-5).
