Women’s Basketball Drops SoCon Road Matchup at ETSU, 52-39

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team was dropped its matchup with the ETSU Buccaneers, 52-39, in The Southern Conference (SoCon) road tilt Thursday night inside Brooks Gymnasium.
 
Makiah Asidanya and Rylan Moffitt paced the Spartans with nine points and seven rebounds apiece.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jaila Lee knocked down a triple at 8:57 to put the Spartans on the board first in the contest, 3-0. The Bucs retaliated by going on an 11-0 scoring run to make it 11-3 ETSU at 3:09. A three-point play from Jeni Levine at 1:50, followed by Moffitt going 1-for-2 at the free throw line at 1:08, cut the deficit to four, 11-7, at the break.
 
Levine made it a one-point game with a three-pointer at 9:09, 11-10. However, the Bucs responded with seven-straight points to regain an eight-point advantage at 6:56, 18-10. The Spartans broke up the scoring with three points to make it a two-possession game at 4:05, 18-13. ETSU was able to close out the half with a 6-0 run for a 24-13 advantage.
 
UNCG found its stride coming out of the break to outscore ETSU, 15-11, in the third stanza. An and-one play from Asidanya got the scoring started at 9:17, 24-16. The Bucs bounced back with a 5-2 run to take an 11-point advantage at 6:27. However, a three-pointer from Asidanya at 6:01 propelled the Spartans to an 8-0 run to make it a three-point game at 3:03, 29-26. The Bucs were able to close out the quarter with a 6-2 run to hold a 35-28 lead going to the huddle.
 
The Spartans tallied a 5-2 run to begin the final frame, cutting their deficit to four at 6:37, 37-33. However, ETSU continued to maintain control of the lead. At 3:23, with the Spartans down, 43-37, the Bucs recorded nine unanswered points for a 52-37 advantage. Moffitt got off the final basket of the game, but ETSU was able to walk away with the 52-39 victory.

  • Asidanya also paced the Spartans with three assists and three steals.
  • Levine chipped in eight points.
  • Mia Simpson and Leyla Minor added four and three boards, respectively.
  • UNCG bested ETSU in points off turnovers (15-12) and fast break points (7-2).
  • ETSU led the way in rebounds (39-33), second chance points (9-5), points in the paint (26-16), blocks (4-1), steals (6-5) and assists (9-7).
  • Both teams were tied in bench points (7-7).
