GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team secured its ninth-straight win behind a 3-2 victory over Kent State on Sunday at UNCG Softball Stadium to conclude the UNCG Invitational.
The Spartans are now 10-5 overall and the Golden Griffins are 8-6 overall.
- The two teams were scoreless after two innings.
- Salem Ward retired three-straight Griffs on a fly out, line out and ground out in the top of the third, before the Spartans were able to put runs up in the bottom of the frame.
- With one out and runners in scoring position, Nya South hit a sacrifice fly to left center that scored Kaylyn Belfield from third for a 1-0 lead.
- Laney Deane then reached on a throwing error that gave Avery Bouquin the extra time to score home from second for the 2-0 advantage.
- The Golden Griffins cut the deficit to one, 2-1, following an RBI single in the top of the fifth.
- With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Bouquin doubled to left center and then South's single to left drove her in to gain back a two-run cushion, 3-1.
- After Caleigh Shaulis doubled to deep left field to bring home Miley Anderson, Brooklyn Shroyer came in relief for Ward in the circle. Ward's stat line ended with 5.0 innings of work, four strikeouts, one walk and six hits allowed.
- Shroyer got out of the sixth inning, as Bouquin caught a line drive at shortstop and doubled out the runner at second.
- The Spartans weren't able to produce anything in the bottom of the sixth, as Shroyer fended off the Griffs in the top of the seventh.
- Kent State stranded one runner in the top of the seventh, as Shroyer struck out the final batter, earning the first save of her collegiate career.

UNCG will travel to compete against in-state foe Queens on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at The Stick Williams Dream Field in Charlotte, North Carolina, at 5:00 p.m.
