GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 battle with the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.
The Bulldogs got on the board first by securing two of three doubles matches. Avery Sager and Maria Sol Alvarez defeated
Kayley Bushnell and
Ivet Sala-Sánchez, 6-2 on court three.
Sophia Cedeno and
Sara Kostic came back to tie up doubles play with a 6-4 win over Valeria Centeno and Isabell Moss on court two. However, Angelina Joy Hug and Sofia Segui notched a 6-4 win over
Sydney Bly and
Sofia Somoano at doubles No. 1 to give UNC Asheville a 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs were able to take a 2-0 lead when Alvarez defeated Bushnell, 6-2, and the second set being retired. Kostic put UNCG on the board with a 6-3, 6-4, win over Moss at singles No. 2. However, Sager put UNC Asheville back on top by two in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, victory over Bly at court three. Somoano made it a one-point match again when she took down Centeno on court six, 7-5, 6-4. Sala-Sánchez tied the match up at singles No. 5 when she claimed a 6-2, 7-5, win over Segui at court five. Coming down to the final match, Hug was able to secure the back-and-forth battle over Cedeno at court one, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5, to give the Bulldogs the 4-3 win.
