Softball Falls to Western Kentucky & Georgia Southern on Opening Day

STATESBORO, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team began the 2026 season with a 6-0 loss to Western Kentucky and a 7-5 setback to Georgia Southern on Friday in the Bash in the Boro at Eagle Field at GS Softball Complex.
 
GAME 1: Western Kentucky 6 – UNCG 0
  • Neither team saw a runner on base in the first inning.
  • Western Kentucky took advantage of a two-out error in the top of the second, scoring two runs for the lead. The Hilltoppers added another run, scoring on a wild pitch for a 3-0 advantage.
  • With runners on first and second with two outs, the Hilltoppers' Kendle White doubled down the left field line adding one more tally for a 4-0 cushion in the top of the fourth.
  • Kaylyn Belfield recorded the Spartans' first hit of the game in the bottom of the frame, but UNCG was unable to string anything together.
  • Western Kentucky's Annie White cranked out a solo homer to lead off the top of the fifth, 5-0, before Kennedy Stinson crossed home plate on a first-and-third situation, extending the lead to six.
  • Brooklyn Shroyer ended her first appearance as a Spartan with 4.0 innings tossed and six strikeouts.
  • Betsy Eatmon was the only other Spartan to tally a hit, singling to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Nadia Andarowski came in relief for Shroyer, who gave up no hits and struck out three batters in 3.0 innings of work.
  • UNCG threatened late in the game, leaving the bases loaded in the sixth and stranding one runner on in the seventh.

GAME 2: UNCG 5 – Georgia Southern 7
  • With two outs, Macy Michael crushed the second pitch of her at bat over the center field fence for a 1-0 lead. This was her first homer of the season and 10th of her career.
  • In the top of the second, the Eagles recorded two more outs, but Nya South hit a rocket over the left field fence to score two runs, extending UNCG's lead to three, 3-0. This was South's first-collegiate home run.
  • The Spartans had runners on second and third before Avery Bouquin sent a bullet through the left side adding another two runs for a 5-0 cushion in the top of the third.
  • Georgia Southern responded in the bottom of the frame, as Valerie Comb hit into fielder's choice to the shortstop that cut the deficit to four, 5-1, as Brooke Kell scored from third on the play.
  • The Eagles went on to score runs in each of the next three innings to take the eventual 7-5 win.
  • A fourth inning RBI double from Kyla Maxwell put the Eagles within three, 5-2.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Georgia Southern scored three runs on three hits and one error, tying the game, 5-5, before Delanie Thames battled at the plate before sending out a long ball for the eventual two-run go-ahead home run, 7-5.
