STATESBORO, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team split its games on day two of the Bash in the Boro, defeating Western Kentucky, 4-2, in nine innings and falling to Eastern Illinois, 3-2, at Eagle Field.

GAME 1: UNCG 4 – Western Kentucky 2 (9 innings)
  • UNCG saw Macy Michael and Laney Deane connect early at the plate, but the Hilltoppers retired the side on a ground out to leave both Spartans on base in the top of the first.
  • Western Kentucky's offense also tallied two hits in the first, as Kennedy Stinson's double to right center with two outs scored Morgan Sharpe and Annie White for a 2-0 lead.
  • Both teams left one runner on in each of the second and third innings, before UNCG capitalized in the next two innings to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Samantha Beck singled to left field with two outs in the top of the fourth to bring home Hadley Gardner from third, cutting the deficit to one, 2-1.
  • Rhyann Jones struck out two of her five total batters in the game in the bottom of the fourth to retire the side before Gardner's double through the left side brought in Betsy Eatmon from second for a 2-2 score in the top of the fifth.
  • Neither team was able to score in the next two innings, forcing extra innings.
  • Both left runners on in the eighth, before UNCG's offense strung together a double from Michael and a sacrifice fly from Gardner in the top of the ninth to give the Blue & Gold its first lead of the game, 4-2.
  • The Hilltoppers had one final chance at scoring in the bottom of the frame, but UNCG held on with defense and a relief appearance from Brooklyn Shroyer to secure its first win of the season.
