STATESBORO, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team was outdueled against Georgia Southern, 2-0, on Sunday at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Georgia. Brooklyn Shroyer took the loss after going 5.1 innings with four hits, three strikeouts, no walks and two earned runs given up.
UNCG is 1-4 overall while Georgia Southern moves to 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles led off with a single to the shortstop that the runner barely beat out. A sacrifice bunt was laid down to move over the runner, but a throwing error by the Spartans resulted in runners winding up on second and third with no outs. Shroyer, in her only blemish off the day, threw a passed ball by her catcher to allow Georgia Southern to score a run and have the runner advance to third.

In this critical moment with the bases loaded, Head Coach Janelle Brenneman brought in Salem Ward to pinch hit. However, the senior was jammed on a 2-2 count and grounded out to the first baseman to end the game.

The Spartans will begin their home slate with the Spiro Classic on Friday, Feb. 13 to Sunday, Feb. 15 in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the UNCG Softball Stadium. UNCG will host Columbia at 3:00 p.m. and Fairfield at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the Spartans will take on Appalachian State at 3:00 p.m. followed by another matchup against Fairfield at 5:30 p.m. UNCG will conclude the tournament on Sunday, facing Appalachian State at 1:30 p.m.
