Georgia Southern Outduels Softball for 2-0 Loss

STATESBORO, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team was outdueled against Georgia Southern, 2-0, on Sunday at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Georgia. Brooklyn Shroyer took the loss after going 5.1 innings with four hits, three strikeouts, no walks and two earned runs given up.

UNCG is 1-4 overall while Georgia Southern moves to 3-2.

  • Both pitchers were dealing early with four combined hits allowed after five innings of action.

  • Shroyer did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning until a hit by Georgia Southern's Kayla Christensen broke up the streak.

  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles led off with a single to the shortstop that the runner barely beat out. A sacrifice bunt was laid down to move over the runner, but a throwing error by the Spartans resulted in runners winding up on second and third with no outs. Shroyer, in her only blemish off the day, threw a passed ball by her catcher to allow Georgia Southern to score a run and have the runner advance to third.

  • The Eagles would send up a sac fly to left field that scored the runner on third base to put the score at 2-0 GSU.

  • Shroyer was replaced by Nadia Andarowski who got out of the inning with back-to-back pop outs.

  • UNCG responded in the seventh inning after two quick outs with a Laney Deane hit-by-pitch and a Nya South walk. Avery Bouquin singled up the middle but the stubborn Georgia Southern defense kept the ball in the infield to not allow the runner to score.

  • In this critical moment with the bases loaded, Head Coach Janelle Brenneman brought in Salem Ward to pinch hit. However, the senior was jammed on a 2-2 count and grounded out to the first baseman to end the game.
