GREENSBORO, N.C. - The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team dropped its home opener against North Carolina Central, 4-3, at Piedmont Tennis Center on Saturday in Greensboro. Senior John Gabelic captured his 100th career win after securing both his doubles and singles matches to move his spring record to 3-1 overall.
The senior duo of Devon Moskowitz and Gabelic took down Kareem Abdul Hakim and Rodrigo Alives on court one, 6-3, to give the Spartans the early advantage. Eric Lindermann and William Elmers dropped their matchup on court three against Leo Fortier and Pol Puig Monteil, 6-2, to set up the winner takes all match for the critical doubles point on court two. Senior Tymofiy Khrystyuk and freshman Hector Nissen battled Antoni Pankowski and Naresh Bharthay for the decisive point. However UNCG would fall in the set, 7-5, for the Eagles to pick up the critical 1-0 lead.
Singles saw Gabelic defeat Bharthay, 6-1, 6-4, on court one to tie the match back up at one apiece. Both teams would then trade points as Hector Nissen would secure a point for the Spartans against Puig Monteil, 7-6, 7-5, but Sammy Presser would fall on court five against Pankowski, 6-4, 6-3. The Eagles caught the break point as Santiago Pinna downed Lindermann on court six, 6-4, 7-6. However, Elmers's ferocious comeback attempt on court three was halted by Abdul Hakim, 6-4,6-0, 6-3, which left Moskowitz to finish up his match on court two with play already decided. The senior would close out his match against Aliveswinning, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3, bringing the final score to 4-3.
