SoCon Announces Men's Basketball Player of the Week

CollegeInsider.com Announces Lou Henson Award National Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's basketball team saw graduate student Justin Neely named The Southern Conference (SoCon) and Lou Henson National Player of the Week, both announced on Monday.

This is the second time that Neely has been named SoCon Player of the Week. He earned the recognition on Nov. 24 after averaging 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds per game in a 1-1 week for the Spartans.

"This is a great start to the month of February," stated Neely. "I am proud of the way we competed. We're going to continue to fight to get better every day as we head towards March."

Neely assisted the Spartans to a 2-0 week, which included an 81-78 victory over Western Carolina inside Bodford Arena and a 67-64 win over Furman on the road. The win over the Paladins snapped Furman's three-game win streak.

The Miami Beach, Florida, native averaged a double-double this past week with 24.5 points per game and 12.0 rebounds per game, averaging 34.7 minutes per game. He recorded his 15th and 16th double-doubles of the season, bringing his career total to 23. This week, he shot 11-for-22 from field goal range for 50 percent, 2-for-4 from the three-point arc for 50 percent and an outstanding 25-for-31 from the charity stripe for 80.6 percent. Neely also chipped in five assists, one block and four steals.

Against the Catamounts, 19 of his 25 total points came from free throws, as he shot 19-of-21 at the line, including the final three in the game to secure the victory. According to UNCG records, Neely's 21 free throw attempts are tied for the most in a single game by an individual player in program history. Francis Alonso's 21 attempts was set on Dec. 22, 2018, against Samford. His 19 made free throws sits him just outside the top 10 of SoCon records and most made free throws since UNCG joined the league in 1997-98. With the win over the Paladins, Neely recorded his 10th game this season with 20 or more points.

Among the SoCon, Neely is leading the league in double-doubles, rebounds, defensive rebounds per game and rebounds per game.

He is nationally ranked in the top five in six categories: first in rebounds (295) and defensive rebounds per game (9.12), second in double-doubles (16) and rebounds per game (11.8), fourth in free throws (156) and fifth in free throw attempts (200).
