Baseball’s Comeback Attempt Falls Short Against Liberty

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team was cut short in its comeback attempt against the Liberty Flames, 12-10, on Tuesday afternoon at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Spartans rallied back from an 11-4 deficit but fell short with the tying run on base.

Liberty entered this game on a nine-game win streak and took the early lead with two quick runs after two innings of action. The Spartans struck in the bottom of the second with a Luke Holland sacrifice fly RBI then an Ethan Brittain RBI single. After a stolen base by Brittain, Tanner Berry capped off the inning with another RBI single to put the score at 3-2 after two. The Flames tied up the game in the third frame then took the lead in the fourth thanks to a solo shot to make the game 4-3. However, the Spartans answered again in the bottom half of the inning with a Holland RBI single to tie up the game, 4-4.

The Liberty offense kicked into high gear in the fifth frame, notching five runs then two RBIs in the sixth to extend the lead to 11-4. UNCG continued to respond with both Brittain and Berry knocking home an RBI apiece and Jacob Dilley adding a sac fly RBI to put the score at 11-7 after six innings. Jake Colucci was given the mound to hold the Liberty offense at bay in the top of seventh. The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native finished out the remainder of the game with only one run given up in the top of the eighth to give UNCG the opportunity to steal the win. The Spartans put together a rally in the eighth inning with a Holland two-run home run, his first of the season, cutting the lead down to three, 12-9. Colucci held the Flames bats to a one-two-three inning and UNCG threatened a walk off, loading the bases with one out. Brody Gardner knocked home a RBI with a sac fly to push the score to 12-10. However Holland, who had a career-high four RBIs on the day,  was struck out to end the game at 12-10.
