Baseball Completes Sweep Over UIC, 8-2
CHICAGO, Ill. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) baseball team cruised past the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) in game three, 8–2, at Curtis Granderson Stadium on Sunday morning to complete the sweep. Seven different Spartans recorded a hit in the game as Brody Gardner led the way with three RBIs.
The UNCG offense continued its tradition of scoring in the first inning with Gardner bringing home Jake Barbour and Luke Holland to open the scoring. Later in the frame, Luke Jenkins doubled down the right field line to score Gardner to go to the bottom half up 3-0. The Flames answered back as they tagged starter Isaac Miles with a two–run home run to bring the score to 3-2. However, that was the only error Miles allowed as he went for four innings with three hits, three strikeouts, no walks and the win.
The Spartans rallied back with Jake Mueller bringing home two runs in the top of the second to extend his RBI streak to five games and put UNCG up 5-2. Miles and the Spartan pitching staff only allowed one hit for the remainder of the game as they locked down UIC's offense. In the fifth, Gardner and Tanner Berry each drove home an RBI to give the Spartans the comfortable 7-2 advantage. Jacob Budzik capped off the game with a solo home run, his first of the season, in the top of the sixth to bring the game to the final score of 8-2 as the remainder of the game was called due to rain.
"Always tough to get a sweep on the road," said Head Coach Cody Ellis. "The energy all weekend was electric, and that really helped. We played through every condition you could think of this weekend, and we never got out of who we were. Solid job all weekend of scoring first and continuing to score to keep the pressure on. Our staff did a terrific job competing and giving us a chance to win every game."
