Softball Extends Win Streak to Seven with 9-0 Shutout Victory Over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team took a 9-0 victory on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep against The Southern Conference (SoCon) ETSU.  
 
The Spartans extend their streak to seven wins and are now 22-12 overall and 3-0 in SoCon, while the Bucs are 12-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
 
The 9-0 victory is the 11th shutout this season for UNCG and matches the 2023 season's 11 shutouts. 
  • The Spartans stranded two runners on base in the top of the first as both Nya South and Laney Deane drew walks.
  • With Salem Ward in the circle, she retired eight straight batters from the first to the third innings.
  • UNCG cracked open the scoring with three runs on two hits and one error in the top of the second.
  • With two outs, Jazmin Mejia singled to left center and Ward followed with her second-collegiate homer and first of the season to deep center field for a 2-0 lead.
  • Kaylyn Belfield took a four-pitch walk and then Macy Michael reached on an error, driving in Belfield from first for a 3-0 advantage.
  • A two run, three hit inning in the fourth frame for the Spartans extended their lead to 5-0.
  • With just one out and the bases loaded, Michael drove a single out to left field for one run and then South followed with her own RBI single to center field for another tally.
  • In the top of the sixth, Belfield and Michael walked and with one out, Laney Deane recorded her 11th double of the season scoring both Spartans for a 7-0 advantage.
  • UNCG added two more runs in the top of the seventh, as Layla Carr hit her first-collegiate double driving in both Rylie Williams and Hadley Gardner adding to the lead, 9-0.
  • ETSU threatened in the bottom of the seventh with two base runners, but Ward retired the side with a strikeout and back-to-back fly outs to earn the win.

UNCG continues on the road to face SoCon foe Western Carolina next weekend beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 28 starting at 1:00 p.m. The third game is set for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 29. All three games will be played at Catamount Softball Complex in Cullowhee, North Carolina.
