Strong Bats Fuel Softball Sweep of Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team swept The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Western Carolina in a doubleheader on Saturday at Catamount Softball Complex.
 
The Spartans claimed a 9-5 victory in game one and then won 5-3 in nine innings in game two.
 
The Spartans extend their streak to nine wins and are now 24-12 overall and 5-0 in SoCon, while the Catamounts are 21-11 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
 
UNCG has now had a home run in nine-straight games. The Spartans have also recorded 10 plus hits as a team in 13 games this season, after tallying 10 and 14 base knocks today.
 
GAME 1: UNCG 9 – WCU 5
  • After a scoreless first inning, both teams scored a run in the second and third innings for a 2-2 game.
  • UNCG's runs were scored on an RBI single from Jazmin Mejia in the top of the second and Nya South's solo homer in the top of the third.
  • Souths' blast was her 10th of the season.
  • UNCG broke open the game in the top of the fourth with four runs on five hits for a 6-2 advantage.
  • Mejia doubled down the right field line for the first run of the frame, before Kaylyn Belfield, Macy Michael and Laney Deane each recorded an RBI single.
  • Brooklyn Shroyer retired nine of the 10 Catamount batters faced between the fourth and sixth innings, which included six of her nine strikeouts, to keep them scoreless.
  • UNCG extended its lead to 9-2 with three runs on one hit and one error in the top of the seventh.
  • The Blue & Gold pushed across the first run as Belfield drew a bases-loaded walk, 7-2.
  • South then reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, and an error gave the Spartans time to push across two runs for the seven-run cushion.
  • Western Carolina's offense pushed across three runs on four hits and one error in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough, as Shroyer earned her 12th win of the season and 40th of her career securing the victory with a strikeout, 9-5.

GAME 2: UNCG 5 – WCU 3 (9 innings)
  • UNCG got on the board first with an RBI single from Deane, scoring Michael for a 1-0 lead.  
  • South cranked her second homer of the day in the top of the third, a solo shot to left center, bringing her season total to 11, for a 2-0 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the frame, Lily Bell drove in a run to cut the Catamounts' deficit to 2-1.
  • After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, South singled through the right side and Belfield slid into home from second base for a 3-1 edge.
  • Western Carolina tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run home run from Tate Stewman in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Neither team scored in the seventh, forcing extra innings and the eighth was also scoreless.
  • In the ninth, Michael led off with a double down the left field line and with runners on first and second after a walk, Deane's single loaded the bases.
  • Avery Bouquin then turned on a pitch and singled to left center scoring South and Michael for a two-run advantage, 5-3.
  • The Catamounts retired the next three batters, but when they went to the plate in the latter half of the frame, Salem Ward retired three straight to hold on for the 5-3 win.

UP NEXT
UNCG will travel to Rock Hill, South Carolina, to face Winthrop on Tuesday, March 31 at 5:00 p.m. at Terry Field. The Spartans will return home for a three-game series with Furman starting with a doubleheader on Friday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m. and concluding on Saturday, April 4 at 1:00 p.m. at UNCG Softball Stadium.
