Big Innings Power Softball Past Catamounts, 10-4

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team secured its second sweep over a Southern Conference (SoCon) foe, defeating Western Carolina, 10-4, on Sunday at Catamount Softball Complex.

The Spartans extend their streak to 10 wins and are now 25-12 overall and 6-0 in SoCon, while the Catamounts are 21-12 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

UNCG has now had a home run in 10-straight games. The Spartans have also recorded 10 plus hits as a team in 14 games this season, after tallying 12 base knocks today.

  • Following two scoreless innings, UNCG pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the third.
  • Jazmin Mejia led off with a walk and Kaylyn Belfield singled before the first out of the third.
  • Macy Michael then dropped down a perfectly executed bunt that scored Mejia from third for a 1-0 lead.
  • Western Carolina took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Tate Stewman and a two-run homer from Kayden Lyda.
  • That lead was short lived, as five runs on three hits and an error in the top of the fifth gave the Spartans a 6-3 advantage.
  • With the bases loaded and one out, Laney Deane cut the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI single.
  • Following a pitching change for the Catamounts, Rylie Williams saw 10 pitches before clubbing a long ball over the left field fence for a grand slam and a 6-3 lead. This was her first homer of the season and 10th of her career.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Western Carolina's Maya McPherson drove a solo shot over the left field fence for a solo home run, giving the Catamounts their final run of the game, 6-4.
  • UNCG threatened in the top of the sixth, but stranded two runners, before adding four more runs on four hits and one error in the top of the seventh, 10-4.
  • With one out, Hadley Gardner lifted a ball high over the left field fence, recording her first home run of the season and 12th of her career, 7-4.
  • Avery Bouquin followed with her own solo blast to left field, bringing her season total to three homers and giving UNCG an 8-4 lead.
  • A two-out double from Mejia and then Belfield reaching on an error, set up Nya South for a two-run double of her own to extend UNCG's advantage to 10-4.
  • With Brooklyn Shroyer in the circle for the last four innings, she retired the three-straight batters in the bottom of the seventh to hold on for her 13th win of the season.
