GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team secured a 4-3 battle with Presbyterian on Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
Ella Olexa was honored in a Senior Day ceremony for her hard work and dedication to the UNCG women's tennis program prior to today's match.
The Spartans were able to tally the first point of the day as the Blue Hose forfeited their No. 6 singles spot. The Blue Hose tied things up by claiming two of three doubles matches. Ladina Bruhin and Roxy Valdes claimed the first doubles match in a 6-0 win over
Ivet Sala-Sánchez and
Kayley Bushnell on court three.
Lauren Thomson and
Sophia Cedeno evened doubles by taking down Luciana Parrilli and Sofia Rodrigo Hidalgo, 6-3, on court one. However, Grace Katzman and Mary Ellen Longmire snagged the doubles point for Presbyterian in a 6-3 win over
Sydney Bly and
Sofia Somoano at doubles No. 2.
Singles play was a point-for-point duel throughout all matches. The Blue Hose took a 2-1 lead after Valdes defeated Cedeno at singles No. 1, 6-4, 6-4. Bly knotted things back up at 2-2 after a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over Longmire on court five. Thomson gave UNCG a 3-2 lead on court three after taking down Katzman, 6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-3.
Sara Kostic fell in a battle with Bruhin on court two, 6-7 (1), 6-2, 5-7, to even the score back up at 3-3. Sala-Sánchez held on to clinch the match for the Spartans, defeating Hidalgo, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, at singles No. 4.
