Softball Falls to Army, 4-3, in Eight Innings

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team fell to Army West Point, 4-3, in eight innings in non-conference action at Boseman Field during Friday's game in the UNCW Tournament.

The Spartans are now 14-9 overall, while the Black Knights improve to 7-9 overall.

  • Both teams went three up and three down in their respective halves of the first inning for a scoreless frame.
  • In the top of the second, Laney Deane led off with a double to left field, her ninth of the season. Rylie Williams replaced her on second and with one out Jazmin Mejia singled up the middle, giving UNCG a 1-0 lead.
  • The Black Knights tallied their first hit in the bottom of the second, but were unable to push her across, stranding the runner on first.
  • Following a scoreless third inning, Nya South doubled the Spartans' lead, 2-0, recording her sixth homer of the season in the leadoff spot.
  • With two outs, Mejia reached on a fielding error and advanced to second base on the play before Hadley Gardner's RBI single drove in the freshman putting the Spartans up 3-0 in the fourth.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, Army strung together three hits for three runs, tying the game, 3-3. Breanna Coonfare's two-run single first cut the deficit to 3-2, before a wild pitch brought Coonfare across home plate for the tying run.
  • Both teams saw a base runner in the seventh, but neither were able to push a run across, forcing extra innings.
  • The Black Knights placed Taylor Brown on second during the international tiebreaker in the bottom of the eighth. She stole third to get in scoring position and Ashton White drove the sixth pitch of the at bat through the right side of the field for the game-winning hit, giving Army a 4-3 victory.
