WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team shut out Army, 2-0, before falling to host, UNCW, 4-0, on Sunday at Boseman Field in non-conference play.
With the 2-0 victory, the Spartans now have eight shutouts this season. In the win, junior
Brooklyn Shroyer had eight strikeouts to surpass the 500-career strikeouts milestone. She now has 503 in her career, with 90 of them while in the Blue & Gold uniform and 413 while with Fairleigh Dickinson.
The Spartans are now 15-12 overall.
GAME 1: UNCG 2 – Army 0
- UNCG and Army were in a pitcher's duel until the bottom of the sixth, as neither team put a run on the board.
- With one out, the Spartans' Kaylyn Belfield hit an infield single and advanced to second base by way of Avery Bouquin's ground out.
- Nya South then walked and was replaced by Layla Carr to put runners on first and second for Laney Deane.
- Deane drove the ball out to right center for her 10th double of the season, bringing around Carr and Belfield for a 2-0 advantage.
- Shroyer and the Spartans were able to fend off the Black Knights in the top of the seventh to hold on to the 2-0 victory, for their eighth shutout of the season.
- Shroyer allowed one hit, walked two batters and struck out eight in her eighth win and fifth shutout of the season.

GAME 2: UNCG 0 – UNCW 4
- The Spartans threatened early with two runners in scoring position in the top of the first, but the Seahawks were able to retire the side with a strikeout and a ground out.
- In the bottom of the first with one out, UNCW pushed across one run on Sierra Persinger's RBI single through the right side for a 1-0 advantage.
- With Rhyann Jones in the circle for UNCG, she struck out the final two batters of the frame to keep the Seahawks at bay.
- UNCW extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth, stringing together two runs from two hits and an error.
- In the bottom of the fifth, Becca Merrick led off with a walk and ended up on third after a stolen base and a ground out. Merrick then scored on a fielding error to give UNCW a 4-0 advantage and hold on to the lead claiming the win.
