BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team fell short to the Samford Bulldogs, 5-2, in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Friday at Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavillion.
Samford got on the board first in the contest after securing all three doubles matches. Hailey Troup and Eleni Liakonis picked up a 6-2 win over
Ivet Sala-Sánchez and
Sophia Cedeno at doubles No. 2. Laila Fishman and Catherine Cardona-Carballosa secured the doubles point for the Bulldogs on court three over
Sofia Somoano and
Kayley Bushnell, 6-2. Lea Erenda and Sara Erenda snagged a 6-3-win over
Sydney Bly and
Lauren Thomson at court one to conclude doubles play.
Samford continued its momentum into singles play claiming the first three matches to clinch the win early on. Liakonis defeated Thomson, 6-0, 6-2, at singles No. 3 to make it 2-0 Bulldogs. Fishman notched a 6-1, 6-3, victory over Bly on court four before Troup clinched the match for Samford in a 6-0, 6-2, win over Sala-Sánchez at singles No. 6.
Sara Kostic gave UNCG its first point of the match after taking down Lea, 6-4, 6-4, on court two. Cardona-Carballosa was able to give Samford its last point of the match after defeating Bushnell in a back-and-forth battle at singles No. 5, 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. Cedeno gave UNCG one more point after earning a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, win over Sara on court one to bring the final score to 5-2.
