MACON, GA. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team rallied to a 5-2 victory over The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer on Sunday at Copelan Tennis Complex to conclude the 2026 regular season.
The win over the Bears marks the second SoCon win for the Spartans this season. The last time UNCG collected two SoCon wins in a season was in 2021. In addition, the last time UNCG defeated Mercer was in the 2022 season with a 4-3 victory.
Mercer tallied the first point of the contest by securing all three doubles matchups. Tea Zivic and Sofiya Tsitavets defeated
Kayley Bushnell and
Sofia Somoano on court two, 6-1. Marina Quinones and Ines Homberg went on to secure the doubles point for the Bears in a 6-4 win over
Sophia Cedeno and
Ivet Sala-Sánchez on court one. Doubles play was concluded with Marie Bannmeyer and Jelena Gojkovic securing the battle over
Sydney Bly and
Sara Kostic at doubles No. 3, 7-6 (7-3).
Zivic was able to take a three-set battle over Bly at singles No. 3, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 for Mercer's final point of the day. UNCG went on to collect the next five singles matches for the win. Bushnell put the Spartans on the board first with a 6-2, 6-3, win over Bannmeyer on court four. Kostic tied the match up at 2-2 after taking down Tsitavets at singles No. 2, 1-6, 7-6 (12-8), 6-0. Cedeno gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead after notching a 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, victory against Quinones at singles No. 1. Somoano clinched the match after defeating Homberg, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 on court five. Sala-Sánchez picked up the final point for the Spartans on the day in a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, victory over Antonia Schweigel at court six, granting UNCG with the 5-2 victory.
