SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Wofford on Sunday to win the series behind an 8-6 come-from-behind victory at Hope Field.
The Spartans erased a 6-0 deficit with seven runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to win their fourth SoCon series of the season.
The Spartans are now 30-15 overall and 10-2 in the SoCon, while the Terriers are 27-12 overall and 5-7 in the conference. This is the eighth straight 30-win season for the Spartans, with the exception of the 2020 COVID-19 season and 11
th time under the direction of 14-year Head Coach
Janelle Breneman.
- Wofford quickly got on the board with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the first, 2-0.
- In the bottom of the second, the Terriers added a run on an RBI double for a 3-0 lead.
- Following two scoreless innings, Wofford continued its offensive attack, adding three more runs by way of a two-run triple and an RBI double for a 6-0 cushion.
- The Spartans capitalized on a seven-run sixth inning to take their first lead of the game.
- UNCG started the rally with a leadoff single from Kaylyn Belfield. Nya South then drove her in with a two-run home run to left field, 6-2. This was her 12th blast of the season.
- Rylie Williams then reached on a fielding error causing Laney Deane to score from third, and then Hadley Gardner's sacrifice fly brought home Avery Bouquin, for a two-run difference, 6-4.
- With two outs and runners on first and second, Macy Michael tallied her eighth home run of the season to put UNCG ahead 7-6.
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Terriers had runners on first and second with two outs. On Parker's single up the middle, Lucier advanced to third but was thrown out at the plate on Belfield's throw from center field and Madelyn McKinnon's tag to keep UNCG ahead, 7-6.
- A seventh inning solo home run from Bouquin gave the Spartans an 8-6 advantage. This was her fourth homer of the season.
- Brooklyn Shroyer and UNCG's defense kept Wofford in line during the seventh, as the Terriers saw one base runner in the frame. The Spartans were able to walk away with the 8-6 victory.
