Softball Wins Seventh Straight, Defeats Campbell, 5-2

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team came from behind to claim its seventh-straight victory with a 5-2 win over non-conference foe Campbell on Wednesday at Amanda Littlejohn Stadium.

The Spartans had 10 hits in the game, which marks the 19th game this season with double-figure base knocks.

The Spartans are now 35-15 overall and the Camels fell to 28-19 overall.

  • Neither team scored in the first two innings, as the Camels tallied the first hit in the bottom of the first. The Spartans' first base knock came in the top of the second, thanks to Hadley Gardner.
  • In the bottom of the third with one out, the Camels saw a single and a stolen base before another base hit, putting runners on first and second. On a double steal attempt, Madelyn McKinnon threw the runner out at second, but Campbell was able take a 1-0 lead as the runner advanced home from third.
  • The fourth and fifth innings were scoreless, as UNCG had two hits and Campbell stranded two runners.
  • UNCG fought back with four runs off five hits in the sixth to take a 4-1 advantage.
  • With one out, Kaylyn Belfield walked and Nya South followed with a single. Avery Bouquin then hit a single to right field, bringing home Belfield to tie the game, 1-1.
  • Hadley Gardner, who came up to the plate with two outs and runners on second and third, selected the third pitch of her at-bat and sent it over the left field wall for a three-run homer, 4-1. This was her second home run of the season.
  • Campbell was able to retire the side before cutting the deficit to two, 4-2, with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth.
  • South added one more insurance run for the Spartans in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to right field, driving in Macy Michael, 5-2.
  • With Salem Ward in relief, the Spartans' defense set down the Camels in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 5-2 come-from-behind win.
  • Michael, South and Gardner each had two hits in the game.
